was anyone at lyden hill track day yesterday ?

I dropped mine around 70 miles around the first corner. it was scary a bit . was going to fast and instead of more lean for whatever reason pulled the brake and went straight to the gravel.

it was a fun day apart from the crash .luckily i am still in one piece

First corner after the start/finish or first corner after the track entrance?

Oh and the track's only a mile long, so if you were 70 miles in to it, you were probably somewhere else Razz.

The first corner as you enter the track. Crashed while carrying 70 miles of speed . Scary

Was on my sv in green session , what session and bike were you on?

Speed is measured in 'miles per hour' Smile.

Anyway; how do you know you were going that fast? Looking at your speed is a good way to panic and crash Smile.

Then - paddock hill. It has ok run off. Certainly much better to run a bit wide than crashing there!

A few times I've run off and managed to JUST get it back on the track before the wall narrows in.

As ever, the trick is to get a teeny bit quicker each time, then you should come across the limits of yourself or the bike in a more calm manner Smile.

I don't remember seeing you ( assuming you have a red yamaha as per the profile pic)

but yes I did underestimate the corner and went in fast and wide.
I know I was doing around 70 as checked the speedo just before the turn . the rest of the day I could not get it to turn at anything more than 66mph and that was running really wide.

It was mainly due to me not leaning enough so need to practice more.

If you're really bothered by knowing what number is on your speedo, I'd suggest getting a camera setup (which can be got for not much these days) and look after.

Before the corner, focus on the turn in point - as you're getting towards the turn in point, move your focus to the apex.

On track there IS a device to judge cornering speed that is much apt and useful - which is why race bikes generally won't have speedos. The knee slider. This shows you how far you are leant over and thus you can get an idea of your cornering speed relative to previous times.

Again - try and improve pace a little at a time.
BUT, I'd make sure you can hold the right lane at a slower pace before trying to up it.

I may have a video for your crash, I'll post up if I can see your mangled bike going down.

just out of interest , can incidents such as those I had cause serious injury or even death ?

I am not following motogp etc to see what happens to those people when they crash but I think if you were to come off on brands hatch for instance in the straight which you will be doing around 110 mile ish then it could potentially kill you right?

Yes.

I have seen someone die in a club race crashing on exactly the same corner. Blind apex, more riders coming behind with no time to react.

I also injured myself reasonably seriously, ending up lying on the apex of the same corner - as you might expect because I actually crashed on Devil's elbow - the left hander halfway around the track, but of course not too far physically.

That was racing too. I've only crashed twice out of many trackdays. Both my own stupidity - low siding first pushing dry track tyres way too hard in the wet under braking, then on cold tyres in damp conditions trying to give another rider plenty of room when overtaking, but seriously compromising my line for the amount of grip I had. Both were easily avoidable.

You can die at 5mph... stop worrying.

no still in one piece and did pick it back up and went in

my main interest is cars and bikes just popped in 3 years ago .I initially got my first bike to commute which I enjoyed it and thought should move up and did .

Here I am now with an R6 and sv650.

Now in car(I have a drift car) , I push myself and there are no boundaries and will always try to get a bit more out of myself. however with bike I am very doubtful . It does give me the adrenaline kick but afraid of coming off it and end up killing myself or having a serious injury.

I didn't know a corner such as that could kill someone !!

I think I should stick with my cars and just do occasional bike track days to try and improve my skills but don't need to be the next Tommy Hill as I am not prepared for any physical injuries

Worst accident I've been involved in was in a car; travelling at a steady speed in a queue of traffic.

My dad was killed riding a push bike on the road.

There's no reason bike track days NEED to be dangerous.

BUT you do have to focus on the task at hand (ie not the speedo) and further, as I keep going on about, make sure you only push your comfort level a little at a time.

In a car, generally you can get away with more twatishness with less injury.

If I'd had the same situation in a car that I had on my bike at Lydden I suspect it'd have been a fair bit worse - possibly death. Brakes failed coming in to Devil's elbow on a 675 - so up to a reasonable clip around the fastest corner of the track.

I was pretty sure I am leaning quite a bit but not just moving my bottom and grab the tank. my tow sliders did touch the floor few times but just needed to move and get my knee down which will try for future track days.

I thought they were expensive at £3 a pic and thought about it long but bought it Smile

Here is a pic , thanks to GsxfDumbarse for pointing out I could buy the pics from https://www.racelinephotos.co.uk/

You ride a motorbike on the road, and you're worried about track days? Eh?

I've heard of people giving up road riding and sticking to the track as it's safer, but never the other way around. Laughing

It's not the speed that will kill you, it's the impact that does. On the track there's very little to hit, and deaths occur so rarely they make the news. Last I heard was a guy at Mallory that died. On the road you have lampposts, cars, curbs, signs to hit.

Very true, I remember seeing an advert(can't remember what for, maybe a safety ad), where you see Moto GP riders sliding off their bikes on track, and in the gravel pits were benches, people, buses, trees. Made you realise that the roads are dangerous places.

EDIT: Found it CLICK ME
