Going out for a ride to find someone to race?

As i don't rely on my bike for commuting anymore, i ride now more for pleasure than necessity. So when i go out for a cruise, dependant on whether i'm heading anywhere in particular or not, I usually end up just looking for someone to race. Get a bit of a rush from it and i guess it lets me know what cars/bikes i can beat on my Hornet

Anyone else do anything similar?

Not really, no

I do however head off for pleasure and always see bikes, I try and play 'keep up' for the most part, obviously riding at my own pace. And the 33bhp restriction gets the blame for not keeping up..

I was waiting at a set of traffic lights once in Windsor on a summers evening, and there was a hard top Porsche 911 in front, it was immaculate so I thought he might fancy a bit of a play. I stayed behind, and it turns out he did.. straight up to speeds. I however, could only go so quickly. And he went off into the distance

I dread to think the amount of bragging he has done about 'beating a bike'... little does he know I was running at 1/3rd power

I enjoy it when it happens, but haven't been out looking for a race since I used to head out to the local car meet ups on a Saturday.

Yeah, i mean if anyone ever shoots past me or goes for it from a roundabout or traffic lights, i'm always after them (unless its a vauxhall saloon or hatchback. Possible undercover plod). Just now my bikes back and loud (nice new exhaust), it feels rude not to

The very few times it's happened to me (about 3) I rev my Engine a little and as we're ready to go, I just take off like a snail and literally crawl into motion.

I stopped making eye contact with people at traffic lights for this reason. Look at some one = challenge to race.

Can't say I go out looking for people to race. If someone pulls up at a set of lights and gets all revvy, then it's on like donkey kong but I always let them go first so I can judge how good of a rider they are.

Had some lunatic try racing me the other day on an RSV Mille, the guy was insane, came up next to me at some lights near the town centre, flew away from the lights, I follow... he's doing all this crazy shit like zipping side to side in some very quick movements and accelerating off, like he's dodging invisible kittens that I'm not aware of.

I overtake him 100ft before a small hump back bridge, with a slight right turn on it, I brake for the bridge, he under takes me doing about 60mph odd, he's fucked his line because he's just hell bent on getting passed me, he literally takes off from the bridge by about 6 inches, travels sideways to the left (bridge is a slight right, remember), land about 2ft to the left, inches from a car and belts it off.

Lights go on red a bit further up as I'm approaching him, he decides to pull an endo whilst filtering down the middle of traffic and his back wheel lands 1ft to the right as it comes back down, an inch off from landing on this guys bumper.

That's why I don't like people racing me, as if I'm in front of them, fuck knows what they're going to do behind me.

I pulled up at another set of lights and said to him, you're off your nut you mate, take it easy! He just said, "Gotta have a laugh haven't ya?"

i've managed to race a murcielago who turned out to be a business associate of my dad, tested him to see how fast he wanted to go then did a bit of racing between two towns.

also did a pseudo drag with a db9 vanquish who i managed to keep up with then just didnt have enough top end to keep going.

was incredibly good fun though.

Theres also the idiots in A4s and things like that who you dont even need to try to beat. cant really class it as racing. more like fly-swatting.

Not intentionally - get yourself to the track if you want that.

Not on the basis of saving kittens, but more that you're pretty guaranteed to find a few people near your kind of level on a trackday - as everone is grouped, then you're only on a maximum of a few miles, so you're pretty likely to have someone JUST faster come past you, so you can give chase .

While on the road the chances are pretty slim really, in the grand scheme of things.

Given my current bike's lack of power and the unpredictable traffic conditions it's usually by sheer luck that I end up in front of 'the pack' on the roads.

Now I always prefer to follow others, especially bigger bikes to see what moves I can learn to deal with M'sian traffic on larger machines. Most get a bit timid but there was one guy on a black Ducati who was really hauling ass and beating the local c90 clones through rush-hour traffic. And just two days ago I ended up following a big white dude on a F650GS as he made it dance like a supermoto through some twisties. Seeing him pull away from a stop also refreshed my appreciation of torque.

On the road, who goes faster comes down not to what bike you got, not what skill you got, or even how big your balls are.

Any-one can go 'fast' on the road, and the one who's fastest is often simply the one who is prepared to put most at risk; life and licence.

That's a lot of gamble... and what's they pay-off if you 'win'?

Take it to the track.

They actually give you points that DO mean prizes for going fast and winning races there.

I wonder how many 'races' I've lost without knowing I'm a participant.

I don't do it, and if someone wants to play I usually slow a bit till they piss off.

Largely for the same reason I don't generally ride in groups, some idiot will end up focusing on the wrong thing (the other bike) and forget about the next corner.

I generally ride pretty quickly on my own, which unfortunately seems to make me a target for this sort of thing.

Never on a bike, because of an incident many years ago in a car. Was driving a nippy Golf one evening and someone in a Cavalier 4x4 came up behind me, overtook, then paused for a few seconds before going for it.

So I followed for a mile or so, 'pushing him through the corners'. Got past under braking for a roundabout, juuuuust about controlled it to the third exit where it joined a dual carriageway up a hill. Inevitably he came past and was not amused. This continued for another fiveish minutes with me right on his back bumper until his ambition outweighed his talent and his car got out of shape. Kerb, spin, kerb, hedge, kerb, spin, stop. And his posh looking Cav got all fally-aparty too.

I picked my way through the carnage as they got out (was 3 of them) and made my way off. Never again!

In a car you might get away with it. I was lucky, there were no cars around (less traffic anyway back then). On a bike it wouldn't have ended so well.

In a car as a lad I did...Pretty much all the time.
If I'd had a motorcycle I would've done too..most definitely.

Now as a proper grownup ( ) I kerb myself....but would be lying if I said I didn't spank the occasional bike. Don't purposely go out looking for a race, I keep to the speed limit and overtake. What's bad about that? It's oldman sensible racing.
I suspect people with that strong competitive streak create more danger than the ones who just love speed. Both a bit dodgy on the road, looks more fun on a circuit.
