...Eating tarmac!

Can anyone remember how many public road 'offs' they've had! Laughing

A few of mine, non of which have resulted in writing off a machine or damaging body parts...

Highsided my first 50cc stepthrough. A nice sweeping bend on Dartmoor and too little experience resulted in hitting the nearside bank with me cursing and throwing a 50 back on the road - whilst being followed by a transit load of my school peers Embarassed

Most recently lowsided the Zed 1100 at about 30-40 when I jumped on the front brake, few slight scuffs and new indicator required - the chap in front of me for whom I'd braked too heavily didn't even see it, just the bloke sat in the bus stop who witnessed a pissed off numpty uprighting a 250kg lump.

In between I think I've had at least three more that were my fault and three that were someone else's, I used to say a dozen but my memory can't recall many others!!

Overtaking in a 30 zone and the woman in her fancy XR3i decided to turn right with no indication resulting in my footpeg on the XS250 puncturing her sill. No damage to me but that one lost my no claims.

Turning left in Exeter and someone pulls out of an ATS tyre place without looking and cuts across my front. I lay still until he approached and then gave him a small piece of my (very pissed off) mind. New bars and kit courtesy of his insurance who stumped up more than I'd claimed for -there's always a first!

And the one to dine out on... Overtaking in a 30 zone on a canvassed rear tyre (Embarassed ). Slightly wet surface and I try to pull back on my side to avoid a ....

....Shell fuel tanker!!! Result... One Z400 jammed under his front bumper and my first go at bodysurfing! (Down the white line in a one piece waterproof suit!!). Ended up by his rear wheels! Driver went into shock and I had, yet another, cussing session extricating the bike from his truck. Threw it in the hedge, hitched a lift to work from one of the witnesses and later retrieved it. New bars and can (which looked more like a colinder!) and a very fetching small dink in the tank!.

I don't remember all of mine too well as they all took place in my first life as a biker, 26 years ago, and not the more recent half dozen years since I've been riding again.

One that I can't forget is the day I picked to test the absolute vmax on my 1977 CG125.

I picked an NSL A road that I knew of but wasn't particularly familiar with and set to business. I was arse up, head down, tucked in behind the nasty plastic headlight cowl/L plate and I chose that moment to stare at the speedo needle creep slowly over an indicated 70mph. When I looked back up there were about 20 yards left before a 90 degree right hander over a bridge.

With drum brakes front and rear and absolute panic mode fully installed I didn't manage to scrub off much speed before hitting the kerb and being spat off the bike. I came to rest half way over the brick wall, 20ft from the kerb, staring down at the railway lines 50ft below me.

I can actually remember slithering back off the wall, cartoon style, and crumpling in a heap on the grass with the wind knocked out of me. It wasn't until I stood to walk to the bike that I realised how much I actually hurt.

The bike was a bit of a state (it did live again) and I wasn't about to ride off anywhere so I sat on the kerb to wait for someone to help. No mobile phones back in those days so it was walk off to hunt for a house/phone box or try and wave someone down.

Lots of bikes passed me without stopping, despite me gesticulating, but eventually a car did and they took me to the hospital. As we drove away I saw the phone box, literally hidden behind a tree and a bit of wall about 20ft from where I'd sat for half an hour!

Anyway, no real damage done except for dislocated neck vertebrae which remain slightly off to this day and are always a concern for doctors when I have had X-rays since.

I've no recollection of how my bike got home but somehow it did.

It remains to this day the scariest motorcycling accident I've had though I've since topped it a couple of times in the car.

Moral of the story? Look where you're fucking going.

Stopped counting after 10.
I estimate more than 70% were my fault.

All I know for sure is that I've crashed every bike that I've owned. And been to hospital more than twice in/with bike gear. Thumbs Up Black Eye

Also somewhere on a hard drive I've got a memo I wrote when I was 17 about how much one hurt and to try harder not to do it again. Laughing

Anyone who buys a CB500 is both sensible and intelligent, thus will have very few accidents (insurance premiums support my theory!).

I'd hope so. With the amount of road tax bikers pay, it's good to see someone finally getting there money's worth!

Only a couple never seen the bother going to hospital so far yet luckily enough. Also only had semi serious road rash once, due to not wearing a jacket.

Two, both within 200 yards of my house.

1 on black ice. Essentially unavoidable, folk were leaping out of their cars to scrape me up and falling on their arses.

1 during a U-turn to pick up my forgotten lunch. It was Chinese curry, so I had to get it. Except it was veggie, so I didn't. Must. Not. Must. N... oh, I've fallen over. Very Happy

Yep. If you included racing (loads) and trackdays (2), it'd be a good chunk higher.
Off roading, well you're MEANT to crash there!

To be fair, over the years the rate generally did slow down a fair bit Smile.

All could have been avoided by myself.

Very few I would want to go near blaming another party.

I should I have had absolutely loads of situations that COULD have been 'SMIDSY's - but I've made a point of seeing THEM first and already putting myself somewhere else Smile.

2 and a half years on the road and i've had one crash on my CBF125 last year. I've also dropped my CBF and NSR on the road.

Filtering past cars that were queuing at a temporary traffic light for road works, guy decided to do a u-turn just as i'm coming up beside his car, we collided, I ended up on the floor with my little CBF on top of me.
No major damage just a cracked fairing, bent bars and twisted forks. His car was scratched all down the side, mirror came off and window cracked from where my bar end hit his window.

And I've dropped one bike, my NSR. I was saying bye to a mate, lent over to do the obligatory 17year old first bump in the middle of a busy high street while parked up by the kerb, feeling all cool on my NSR and I lent to far and toppled over Embarassed
No real damage to the fairing just a few scruffs.

Edit: I also dropped my CBF on an icy morning in winter when I first got it. Coming out of my grove is a downwards sloping left, ice on the road, and for some retarded reason I grabbed my front brake, bike went from under me, all this happened while some woman just watched and then walked off as I was lying on the floor trying to get out from under my bike so I could pick it up.

Two crashes to date. Both SMIDSY's. Both white vans.

First one pulled out of a side road. I hit the brakes, back wheel locked up and down went me and the bike and ended up sliding along the road until we both ended up under said van. Bike was written off, I was okay, apart from being a fair few aches.

The second one was on a brand new bike that replaced the one that was written off. It was two days old and I had been tootling around to run the engine in. I had 280 miles on the clock and decided to call it a day and head back home. I was sat at a junction waiting to pull out and all I can recall, is hearing a loud bang and coming to in the middle of the road with the bike in bits and myself somewhat dazed and confused.

It turned out the a van had gone straight through the back of me. He didn't see me because he was coming down the rowd looking to the right to see if he could get through the junction without stopping. Rolling Eyes

No major injuries except for a queried fractured coccyx, that the hospital won't x-ray, as the only treatment would be analgesia anyway. I felt like I'd gone 12 full rounds with Mike Tyson after that one though and only recently have I been able to sit down without some discomfort, after nearly eighteen months.

Have dropped the bike on more than one occasion in the early days. The funniest one being in front of a load of other people. I went to do a U turn on a very steep hill. Goes to put my right foot down around half way round for balance and discovered that due to the steepness of the hill, the ground was a long way away and....thud. Embarassed

Not including parking accidents, I have had two incidents on the road. Once on my Suzuki Mauarder which I low slided off the roads. Only damage was the mirror came a bit loose, so tightened it up and carried on!

A couple of years later on my Honda Deauville returning from a tour in Scotland the tyres were a little worn and the road was damp. So coming down the hill I lost traction and the bike went from under me and skidded into the grass. Totally my fault and an expensive repair but luckily I came away with only a few aches and pains.

That was in 2011 and no incidents since.
