 |
|
Finally found somewhere that would let me (new rider) test ride the Street Triple (thank you Bevan MC, Cardiff) and all I can say is, wow
Having so far ridden a CG125 (CBT), CBF125 (6 months on L plates) and a Fazer 600 and SV650 for my DAS, I don't have a huge riding history, but the ST is clearly on another level.
The good news was it was perfectly tame at low revs and I could easily see myself riding one. Even being a bit nervous at first, the bike didn't bite and I never felt like I wasn't in control. My god, it just keeps pulling and I probably only used half the rev range The sound was everything I expected, I love that Triple whine. My CBF is silent by comparison.
The not so good? The steering felt a bit heavier than I expected, but after 30 mins I think I was getting more confident and used to it. The buffeting at 70 was far more than I expected, although the weather was crap today so that probably didn't help. It felt a bit skittish in the wind; is that a common issue with these or was it just the high winds? I got the OH to jump on the back and she wasn't impressed (static only), but again, she's never ridden pillion and it was the feeling of being perched high, more than her general position/comfort.
So, do I buy one or not? I'm still going to try the ER6F, to see whether I really prefer a faired bike enough to make a head over heart decision, but I suspect I'll still have a hankering for the ST. If I can't get the OH to like the Triumph though, it could turn into an expensive commuter.
Decisions, decisions...
TL;DR
Street Triple |

I think you'll find the triumph a hell of a lot more exciting than the kawaker but your OH will prefer it. ____________________ Bye bye Z hello Versys |

Yamaha MT09...
USDs, radial brakes, underslung can.
Makes sense.
I'd have a used triple at used prices, never from a dealer though. MT09 however... |

You get all that on the Street Triple, but it's less hairy than the MT-09, surely that makes the Triumph a better bike for the beginner?
When I tested the MT-09 I had already had a go on a STR and the only thing the MT did better was to pick it's front wheel up, unexpectedly and it would have been a little lighter on the wallet but in every other way the STR was a better bike FOR ME. Other peoples opinions may vary and both bikes have no trouble selling
If the OP can find a friendly Yamaha dealer then try both the 09 and 07. |

Sounds like you might have been holding on with your hands too tight, perhaps a little tension in the shoulders as well.
The steering is actually really light, if you relax it's incredibly flickable, half the reason I love it so much is it reminds me of a 125 not a 600.
I'm not sure, but I think they do a comfort seat as an optional extra. That could be a way to win over your Mrs.
I've just got standard seat, did 5 hours with 1 10min stop last week. Then 3 hours on the way home.
What I love about it, its upright and comfy, you can crunch the miles, but when you get to a nice piece of road, you can hunker down and release the smiles |

I probably was holding on too tight, it's something I had to work on during DAS and as I started to relax more it all started feeling much better.
Still grinning now just remembering the first moment I opened up to join a dual carriageway |
