Oil top-up

Hi,

The oil in my bike is running low and I wondered if it would be alright to just top it up, or do I need to drain it first?

I don't know what oil is in there at the moment, so if it was 10w30 and I topped it up with 10w40 could that be a problem?

Topping up is fine, but 1L bottles are sickeningly pricey.

For the cost of an oil filter, I'd just drain it and replace the filter too.

For peace of mind just dump what you have in there and put fresh in.

A spanner and an old washing up bowl, its a quick 10 minute job.

You can get a 5L of 10w40 oil in Asda for £16 which is perfectly fine for your bike.

Is that the motorcycle specific oil? If so, fine.

However, don't use anything posh sounding that's designed for cars and says that it has friction reducers in it: that could cause clutch slip.

I and many others just use whatever 10w40 car oil is cheapest. Bike engines tend to lag generations behind cars: any oil that you can buy today will comfortably exceed what most bikes (and specifically your YBR) were designed for.

I can never understand buying 1 litre bottles when they are half the price of 4 litres, but then changing the oil just because you need a top up and don't want to get stung for the price of 1lt bottles seems equally mad (as long as your oil change isn't due)

Sounds like its a new bike as he doesn't know whats in there. An oil change is needed as soon as you get it home in my book.

I'd rather change it at 1,000 miles than buy a shitty chinky dink only for it to break down in less than 1,000 miles , seen loads of these break down or look like shit after a bit of mileage or a drop of rain. In fact, i would not risk my life on a £800 new bike.

Best I ever found Castrol Racing 1 "for Motorcycles" was 4L £29.99.

It's a fully synthetic oil, I'm off to Tesco pick up 4 x 1L for £24!

I've used this as I got a 4L for Crimbo pressy! so nothing to lose.

Everyone says not to put fully synth in an old machine as it's not suitable. The old girls never run so freely, slick gears and zero clutch slip on the power.
