Reliable used sportsbike on a budget?

I've got a moderately small budget (£4k tops) and am considering making the jump from my 400 to a 600 sports bike.

I've had a bad experience with carb'ed bikes so it must be fuel injected. Other than that, something thats generally reliable is a must as I may use it to get to work on sunny days, bonus points for overall prettyness.

I like the CBR600RR's styling and undertail exhaust. It seems to fit the bill quite well, but was wondering if it had missed any close competitors that still hit the above brief?

I've had a look at the Triumph 675's but they seem slightly out of budget.

4K will get you a good condition fairly low mileage 2004 - 2007 600rr, a k4 - k6 600 gsxr or even a zx6r 2005 - 2007.

Been looking at the above myself with the same budget, will probably get involved later this year but that's what I observed from browsing.

CBR600RR is very revvy, but very reliable too. If it was my money and I had to go for a 600 supersport, I would go for an R6, even more revvy, but so much fun on the right road at the right time.

I would be tempted by a 675, but the oil consumption horror stories of the early ones would put be off somewhat.

My money would go on a C model (05-06) zx6r, you will have a fair bit of change from your £4k too

Slipper clutch, 636cc engine (revvy and great mid range for a 6) and excellent suspension for the road (compared to the stiff B model suspension).

Anything 600 will feel fast coming from a 400. Have you rode a 600 before? try a few so you can make a fair comparison. £4k is a decent budget though, a lot of choice. Don't rule out 1000's imo.

There's a host of GSXR-750s in your price range, if you feel like more power.

The first gen 1000cc fireblades are in your reach, as are several R1s.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, im suprised noone has suggested a ducati 748 - maybe the reliability requirement is ruling them out

And to rhys, no im a 600 sports virgin! The previous bike was a ZXR400 and I've ridden the new Bandit 650 a few times, but i'm aware (and somewhat excited) by the rather large jump in bhp.

Come on dude, Scan auto trader, go look at dealers in your area and sit and test ride a few. Choose the one you like and the one you like riding.

At the minute you're just inviting 50 different opinions from internet strangers.

If you find a bike you like the look of and like the way it rides, then post back about any potential problems.

Don't wanna sound like an old man but have you thought of a cbr600f? Loads around on that budget, a lil more comfy, cheaper on insurance maybe fuel but still sporty.

I'd have a look at 05-06 ZX6's, can't fault mine at all and very good value for money IMO compared to what other bikes you can get on the same budget.

Can get them for as low as 3k now too with fairly low mileage so will give you enough spare cash to insure it and tweak with it if you wish a little bit

A jump up from a 500 to a 600 is a much bigger step than a 600 to a 1000 I'd say; with the caveat that the rider on the 600 knows how to turn the throttle, of course .

I really miss my Honda i don't think you could go far wrong with a 600rr.... I changed to a 2006 zx6r 636 recently and although the Honda was quite a bit newer it's a far better bike. The only thing the Kwak has over it is the slipper clutch and a touch more midrange.

Mint zx636r or overpriced but good cbr600rr....
R6 ok if you can stand the all or nothing sporty engine and riding position.
gsxr6 also good, just don't light my fire.

Best bet is to try a few for size.

Ducatis always have an element of risk, second hand....

Haha. Nope. I have a Fazer 1000. I don't even like Hondas but if you’re upgrading to your first supersport, my opinion is that it probably pays to go with the most forgiving and sturdy of the lot.
