Policeman signals?

What does it mean when a policeman steps into the road with his big fluorescent jacket on and puts his arm out with his palm facing you?

Is it stop over here or stop as soon as possible (to show off the fact that although you're going double the speed limit, you can infact stop quickly.)

Also are there any other signals commonly used by police that we should all know about?
