Seen an 06 BMW F800 and am considering trading in the ZZR for it (assuming I can get a decent amount for it / sell it privately)

The F800 ticks all the boxes for what I practically need the bike to do,

It needs to live happily outside,
Be reliable
Be easy to maintain and keep running
Cheap to run on insurance and fuel

Well, it's German so it should be practical.

The ZZR currently
lives happily outside
Has been fairly reliable
easy enough to maintain, just need to keep on top of chain adjustment
cheap enough to insure, could be better on fuel (52mpg)

It's also been in the garage for an oil leak, the alarm taking off, fork seals, chain and sprockets and a few services.

I'm wondering if it might be coming up time to consider getting something newer might be a good idea but the BM just looks quite soul-less compared to my ZZR, due to being restricted I've not been able to ride the F800

Wondering if seeing out my restriction period and then changing might be an idea...

If you're still restricted, then there's zero point in changing bikes IMO.
Wait till it's over, then the whole world opens up.

I've test-ridden a couple of F800s and they're nice, maybe a bit plasticky feeling, but don't exactly set your life on fire. I couldn't bring myself to swap the Bandit for one, just not "better" enough to me (flame suit on!). Quite a few comments about on reliability problems, too. MPG is good though....

Just to cloud those rose tinted specs a little, don't kid yourself that a modern BMW is an automatic gateway to total reliability.

People like to tell you BMs are the ultimate (and you would want to think so too, if you were paying 50% more than an equivalent bike with a different badge on it) but there's plenty of instances of them going horribly wrong and being a sod to work on.

It's also worth keeping in mind that if you want anything more than a set of pads or an oil filter, there's a dearth of pattern parts around, so you might be stuck with factory prices and they certainly know how to charge!

I'm not saying they are crap, but do lots of research and know what you might be getting into.

Again the BM bug bites. These bikes really get to me....I suppose I fall into the "I want one category" why I'm not sure, perhaps just a love of old BMW cars and the bikes being a little but different than the norm, the engineering etc...

But I do keep reading through sites and speaking to people, the vast majority of which have had anything from minor stuff to downright major hassles with them.

Some take it as a part of BM ownership? I wouldn't, it would really piss me off to the point of selling the bike again if something was amiss, my want of ownership would soon turn sour.

So my rose tints do not could my judgement, there are far better more reliable easy and cheaper to work on bikes out there especially if you're relying on it or on a cash flow budget. So I personally stay away from them as much as I long for an old R100RS in orange!

That's not to say by all accounts even on here people seem to have a lot of trouble with other "newer" bikes in general. Seems the older the better in a lot of ways, simpler too.

I love the talk for example about the fuelling on the MT09 rider modes and all. On my 22 year old four carb girl with 65K on the clock I decided a bit of preventative spannering maybe in order, check the carb sync, knew I shouldn't have bothered wasting my time, all is in order! The bikes fires on the button, little bit of choke, fuels perfectly in every gear /rev and hopefully without the kiss of death will continue to do so or a wee while longer!

not sure about bmw bikes but i've been put off them due to a colleagues bmw car which has had over £500 of things go wrong with it in the past 2 months, seems to be filled with proprietary bollocks that does nothing but complicate matters and result in having to go to bmw dealers/specialists to get anything done at extortionate amounts

may be completely different on the bikes but it put me off regardless,

he needed to pay them to re-program his car just for swapping his battery out ffs Laughing
