Please explain what has happened in the following video.

The rider is NOT counter steering!

C/S Not Required, Apparently

Have the laws of physics been broken?
Have we been misled by the C/S gurus?

Anyway, Pass the popcorn

At the low speeds he's travelling, the centrifugal force trying to straighten the bike isn't too bad, so he can initiate the turns with more body lean and far less countersteer than you would at higher speeds.

Also by the looks of things those are some custom, raised clip-ons.
I doubt the standard 600RR handlebars would be anywhere near as good for this gymkhana business.

I'm confused. How do you know he/she isn't counter steering? I was expecting a video of someone with no arms or somesuch. Counter steering at that speed would be very subtle. Hands holding the bars very lightly and just a touch left and right, isn't it? Maybe I've completely misunderstood CS...

He's never above about 20 or 30 mph, so doesn't need to counter steer. Wink

Nice gym work. Thumbs Up

How do you know they're not counter streering? Anything above walking pace should be done by counter steering really, ok you can use your footpegs and body weight to some degree but you counter steer without knowing really. I'd imagine they are counter steering slightly.

Counter steering baffles many people but it's natural haha! Thumbs Up

There's a mixture going on here, counter steer plus counter weight steering.

Better example of slow speed tight steering, "counterweight" or "counterbalance" steering, pivoting the bike under you whilst you stay virtually upright (sometimes!) Gives better balance.

Turning the bars in the direction he wants to go. Green lane brigade use that skill more than us tarmac boys.

I think it's a useful skill to master....

Whole test in less than a minute.

Would be fun to watch!

Very skilful, wonder how many highsides he's had to get that good?

Not as good doubtless, but it's surprising how rapid an experienced rider can get around the cones even on a stock machine. The guys in the video are clearly serious about their hobby, but when I used to do gymkhana we were all pretty casual about it and we used to turn up on standard bikes. The fast guys were still very quick around the cone circuit. I remember one guy on an unmolested NSR250, for example.

On some tight bends, he's on full lock - but on some of the faster sweeping bends he's clearly countersteering. As mentioned look at the front wheel.

When hes cranked right over, touching the peg on the floor, he is steering the opposite way to the lean he is in to flick the bike back up and over.

Countersteering.

Countersteering.

And, short of putting a foot on the ground, there is no other way of flicking the bike over to the other side.
