I've got around 6000 as an ideal budget. After something fun, pretty fast and just general enjoyable to ride, whilst still being practical enough for the odd commute. I'd ideally like to buy new.

Currently the top 2 contenders are the Honda cb650f and the Yamaha MT-07. Always had Hondas and always been happy with them. Reliability and stress free running is also a priority.

Any opinions or other bikes to consider?

MT-07 all day over the dreary CB650F. The Honda has a bigger engine, yet develops about 25bhp less than the Hornet 600 it replaces.

Gotta be the MT-07 out of the 2.

Anything but a Honda when it comes to 'fun'. Laughing

I've been looking at naked middle weights too. Going for a bmw f800r over the triumph, I just can't get past the looks of the street triple. Yes yes I know, the bmw looks equally as ridiculous

Edit- I'm not buying new though

I do like the look of the mts but I also like the look of the kawasaki z800. Perhaps give that a looky looky too

I didn't really consider the street triple. I just really don't like how it looks as silly as that is. I can't get over it.

Didn't consider the kawasaki that's worth a look.

The Honda in the HRC colour scheme is just so utterly beautiful to me I'm having a real hard time not just going for that, despite the fact I know it's not going to have quite the fun factor of the mt or a monster etc. If they had just given it 100bhp and had it lose a bit of weight id snap it up.

No thanks Honda.

MT07 is just so boring... The MT09 is far nicer, unsure on price bit I'd never ever recommend the 07.

I've seen that 650f in the flesh, salesman told me about 85hp, that's plenty enough, lovely 180 rear tyre as well.

It actually looked well made, fairly good quality for a change on a modern Honda!

I liked the look of it a lot, I mean a lot. Wish they'd had a "moonstone" or whatever with gold wheels.

It won't keep with the Triumph's MT09 etc... but if you're not into that type of riding and are a mere mortal rider like myself I reckon it'll be fine, capable of a lot more than you are.

They're supposedly offering an "instrument visor" whatever that is, possibly a fly screen which would help with the commute.

I took a Street Triple R for a test ride, and I have to say I just didn't 'get' it. Don't get me wrong, it was a brilliant bike, but just not my cup of tea. I've a old M900, and I wouldn't swap it. Maybe you need to ride it like a twat (which I didn't, it being a demo!) but am happy riding my monster like that?

It's the visuals for me. I cant ride around on something I dont love the look of.

Been considering finding a low mileage 2013 Hornet? Better option?

You need to ride it like a twat. The older model wheelies with little provocation, the brakes are sharp and it corners like not a lot else. The best part though is the match of the engine versus gearing. It just pulls and pulls and pulls. I went for a ride with my mate who owns my old Daytona 955i at the weekend, and I think he had a bit of difficulty keeping up. I opened the throttle hard in first and then second and got to the redline. I was doing 85 at the top of 2nd gear... Shocked

Street triple? FZ6 (love mine), Hornet?

you'll get a mint condition fz6 for half that budget, 98bhp, comfortable seat (riders section is pretty long so can adjust position from upright to a bit leaned in etc)

You seem to have dismissed the Street Triple, you should take one for a test ride first. It's the best bike I have owned from a do it all perspective.

I was planning on buying another street bike after being away from the saddle for two years, but it seems nothing has surpassed the Triumph in my absence and I don't want the same bike again - although I almost did buy one.

Try an used Hornet 600/919. Reliable and cheap to keep the good times roll. You do not have to spend all your money. Keep something for tires, oil, fuel, spare parts, maybe some trips and track days. Thumbs Up

I don't find that I have to ride my Street Triple like a twat to enjoy it, although it is more than happy to be ridden like that. Since I got mine one CBR (600rr) riding friend has also bought one and the other really wants one, something to do with twisty roads and a usable midrange Laughing

MT-09 is a decent bike, it didn't light my fire but if you like it then get one, see if you can swing the Akrapovic into the deal as they do sound good Twisted Evil

Test rode the MT-07, Hornet, F800 and a few others just for fun.

Was waiting for the new CBR650F after seeing it at Excel but 85bhp put me off a bit as my old one had about 105bhp.

Tried the triple and for me it was the best bike.

So I bought a brand new 2014 plate and it wasn't much over your £6k budget, at least with the stock can.

Hey if you don't like the looks then its a hard choice to make but
it sure rides nice.

Also comes with free belly pan, flyscreen and seat cowl at the moment.

Heres some pix of mine. the looks might grow on you Smile

Try the z800, I was in the market last year, tried the street, Harley 48, Yamaha fz8, Suzuki gsr750, new bandit, and a few more,

Got my list to the 2013 street or z800, after trying the z800 I fell in love with the engine, styling and handling, if you ignore the weight over the others, to be honest 99% of people won't notice the difference,

Now a year down the line I think I made the right choice and its held up well bar a puncture and a clutch issue (factory recall has sorted it from being noisy and slippy, to smooth and grippy)

Try one, you might like it!
