Hello there i need a bit of advice
I done a das course about 6 years ago but needed more training and did not take test and just got my self a rs 125 on my cbt and drove that around for two years .
Now iv came back to biking passed another cbt and got my theory book for this Friday .

The question is do i pass my theory then get and pay about 800 for a rs 125 to practice and commute and get some miles in on or should i just book self in for some training and go strait for big bike test and maybe just get a cheep scooter to commute on till i pass. im looking at the cheapest/ fastest option and got 800 saved already . thanks

Book theory and get it done now anyway, its £30 and pretty much unfailable.

How about contacting a local school and chat to them. If you want a big bike then pratting about on a 125 isn't really going to cut it.

You shouldn't have a problem with DAS with a bit of experience under your belt.

Six years ago, you could have taken tests on that 125, and got restricted licence that would have auto-upgraded to a full A after two years... so anything up to four years ago... FOR grand sum of £121.50.

NOW, unfortunately, testing on a tiddler gets you an A1 - 125 Only licence, and that is all. To get a restricted licence, that no longer auto-upgrades, you have to test DAS style on a big bike, and for full A test under DAS on more powerful big-bike.

So if you want a big bike... now, you basically gotta do DAS.

Personally I can see little to reccomend an Aprillia RS125 to any-one; let alone a learner. While £800? If that was all the money I had to buy a bike, I CERTAINLY wouldn't sink it into an RS!

Sporty two-strokes aren't the cheapest or most reliable of bikes; while ones ragged hard by kiddie-g-kwik learner's aren't likely to fare well. You dont get much Learner bike or ANY kind these days for that sort of money, and an RS at that price? Well, I would expect it to either come in card-board boxes 'Some assembly required'... or be very soon in those boxes.

And if that's all the dosh you got? Well... my sort of 'fun' I'm a bit of a mechanical masochist like that, a motorcycle necromancer... but probably not so helpful if you want something to, heaven forbid, RIDE Laughing

A DAS course, MIGHT give you a ride what you like licence in under a week.

So in terms of getting 'on the road' in a hurry, by the time you have sorted CBT or DAS, found a bike, got it insured, got it collected etc... there could be bog all in it either way.

Key component in the plan though is 'money'; and like I said; £800 don't go very far. I was scaring myself last night doing quote comparisons for mopeds! My Daughter wants one when she's 16 in a few months Doh!

The 'Under a Grand' bike market is pretty much the bargain basement; and while a lot of learner-legals fall into it pretty soon by dint of not starting much higher, new in the show-room; to get a 'decent' bike, these days, I would say £1500 is about entry money.

That would get you a pretty decent, three/four year old Yamaha YBR Learner-commuter, with nice fresh MOT, that promises to be relatively tidy, reliable, easy to live with and long term economical, with good resale prospects for fair chunk of what you paid for it, if looked after.

Would also get you a pretty useful 'big-bike' by way of something like a CB500, SV650, 600 Bandit or the like, or much much more, depending on what you want/need from a bike; but ought to get a pretty good commuter-twin, that ought to be reasonably easy on the wallet by way of maintenence, insurance and the like.

£1000 and down? Well, its hobsons choice of what comes along, and of that, condition is all! But the more 'boring' it looks, chances are the better value its likely to be.

So, its swings and roundabouts, and back to cold hard cash.

You cant spend your £800 twice over... on a DAS course and a bike.... if you spend it on a DAS course, and ball-park that is what a DAS course costs these days, give or take, you wont have much chance to realistically buy any bike.... but that £800 might squeek you a cheap 125 to at least get wheels under your bum, until you can find more money.

So... ask your wallet! That's what's calling the shots here, I think.

That. You're not going to get a license any other way.

Well, you could buy your own 600cc+ bike, insure it through Bikesure and get it to and from the test centre legally, but it's problematical.

Just find a decent local training school - you'll want to speak to the actual instructor who'll be training you and sniffing for signs of nobbishness.

Hello thanks for replys . As said I got my theory this friday the 9th may . Already done my cbt and instucter said he do das for 500 coz done cbt with him . Then test at erith test center .
I have no intention of wanting a 125 want a zx6r or a ducati monster old shape and lookin at about 1600 .

I just did not no if to put strait in for a das course or buy a 125 to pratice mod 1 stuff on then sell on once passed . Or pay for course then look for cheap 125moped to get around on till pass .
Not been on a bike for 6 months but quite a confident rider

Ah, you'll be fine.

Buying a 125 to practice / commute on does make sense, but it's not without risk or costs.

You could buy a lemon, or get stiffed on insurance by an underwriter who won't let you switch the policy to another bike after you're licensed up. That could cost you a few hundred just by itself.

When I was doing my DAS there was a lad who had never ridden a bike before - did his CBT and the next day he was starting DAS on a 600. I won't say he got on fine - he struggled with the gears (kept trying to change down gears when doing emergency stop!), but as you're not completely new to biking you will probably do ok. People do go straight into DAS and bypass the "time on a tiddler" stage, so do that if you have no intention of buying a 125

I did probably 3-4 days of riding a 125 before moving to a 650, but I found every aspect of riding easier on the 650. I don't think gears would be more difficult by skipping the 125.

I think learning on a 125 is harder so the transition becomes easier
