As It was raining and I was bored I decided to change the Fork Oil,
The GSF500 has a soft front end and a quick Google search suggested a heavier oil may help,

The job itself is pretty easy but just takes time to drop the forks off,
From start to finish it took around 2.5 hrs but that's with a cuppa or 2,

CMC in Clay Cross supplied the litre of 15W Fork oil : £12.99.

So the fairing is removed and bike supported, I whipped the front wheel and brake calliper off, this is it with 1 fork removed,

Fork stripped and left to drain.

there was 360ml of nasty old oil.

And was replaced by 380ml of nice fresh new oil.

Only ridden 5 miles but the front does feel better,

I know it isnt a How too, more a Periodic maintenance nudge,
little things we ignore.

Did you remember to pump all the old oil out of the damper? If you don't strip the forks and get every last drop of old oil out, you'll find that the new oil soon gets contaminated and looks just the same as the old.

Yeah, pumped and drain, even clean ragged the tubes and cleaned the spring, washer and spacer tubes.

Old fork oil has to be one of the worst smells known to man.

The stuff I get out of my forks usually resembles yoghurt in both colour and consistency and boiling sweaty jockstraps in odour.

That stuff looks pretty clean and new to me.

I reckon you need to go over more bumps.

Did you re-do the seals whilst you were at it?

I'm not sure whether I'd be brave enough to tackle the fork oil...

I've done valve clearances which was bloody scary, but forks shit me up. Hearing horror stories of a bolt at the bottom or some such and not being able to loosen stuff.....

Enjoy the leaking.

OEM oil seal is like £12 each... anything other than OEM will leak. Laughing

When I went into a shop to buy a brand new one for J.M.s GS500, £14 is what I paid, other shop is £12, so £12 from a dealer seems average. Never seen super cheap ones like that Thumbs Up
