Hi all,

t'other day I manage to have a small off on my bike. Nothing major, my fault. Car in front decided to anchor on just as I glanced down at my clocks. I glance back up, car in front is stationary.
"oh shit", I go, as apply my brakes progressively in an attempt to stop the bike which was going well until I hit the car in front Embarassed

Yup, I know, poor obs, following too close, don't be a dick etc etc.

Fortunately, there was no damage to the car in front, driver was eager to leave it and shoot off and get home, despite me trying to insist he at least takes my phone number. However, my bike is a little fucked. I'm not sure what's up with it, but the wheel don't point straight when the bars are staight. I managed to nurse it home, and it wasn't massively bad but pretty noticeable.

I've had a bit of a look and the forks don't appear bent, nor do the bars. But I can't tell why it's pointing the wrong way. On top of this, the bike needs a new chain/sprockets, rear shock, front tyre, tax and mot. It's currently in my back yard waiting for me to sorn it (which I can't do yet as I realised I don't have the V5, as the old keeper never sent it off).

So, i'm reckoning a good £400 to get it back on the road again, at least. Considering I only paid £550 for it, that's a fair amount of money. I'm also rather skint.

So, do I get it put back on the road (it's an insanely fun bike when working) or do I sell it for whatever I can get for it and put the proceeds and the £400 from not repairing it towards a new bike?

Tl;dr bike is fucked, needs around £400 to go back on the road. Do I sell it and try to get another or do I repair it?

I guess if you can get more than a couple of hundred for it and get another bike for about the same as you paid before, you'd be better off selling it. If it's only worth £50 now, get it fixed. You'll obviously need the V5 before selling on.

The forks have probably twisted in the yokes. Loosen the pinch bolts slightly on the top and bottom yokes then dunt the wheel against a wall a few times. This will normally be enough to straighten it up again.

I will leave any financial decision making up to yourself.

Likely that the forks are just twisted in the yokes.

It's a 94 CB400SF. I'll try untwisting them tomorrow, hopefully that will fix the steering.

With the rear shock, it's been shitting oil all over the swingarm, and it looks like the seal at the bottom has caved in. Does this mean it needs a new shock all together? I can only seem to find sets of new ones on ebay for £150.

It'll only cost me £66 to tax and mot it, providing it goes through an mot first time, so if I can fix it all on the cheap then I want to keep it, as it is a fantastic bike. I just don't really have the know how to fix it on the cheap Laughing

I honestly did have a little bet with myself as to how long it would take you Wink Laughing what's happened to the blackbird?

If I can sort it out now i'll probably be selling it around June/July time when I start my new job and can afford a nice shiny new bike, so if you're still after it then Wink

Was good, but went too fast too easily.

I loved for touring, my biggest regret was trading it for what was essentially a pile of shite.
