PostPosted: 06:19 - 09 May 2014    Post subject: Aldi action cam - Thursday 15th Reply with quote

I noticed this in the back of their last leaflet and as it's within a week I had a look online today (cool story)

https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thursday-15th-may/product-detail/ps/p/action-camcorder-ac-500-touch/

Anyone know much about the product? No brand name unfortunately. Looks like a good price just not sure on quality.

Thanks.

I'd pay another £10 and the cost of a memory card for an SJ1000 from eBay.

1080p, decent video quality, far more mounting options, good review.

The Aldi one has a worthwhile warranty, granted, but at that price and at the rate cameras are advancing, I'd consider either one as essentially disposable.

I've been looking to get one of these but didn't want to fork out for a GoPro or anything. Can anyone suggest if these mounts/fixings look good? My main concern would not be about video/sound quality but whether the cheaper outfits would fall off Confused

I just bought the sj1000 for £40 delivered, picture quality is good, but the mounts can be a little shaky at times, I've manufactured a simple solid mount which holds the camera more still, and to be honest I'm impressed, OK not as good as a drift but close!

Bubblin77 where from? eBay?

Amazon, it was listed and fulfilled by Amazon, was £43 (not £40 as i originally said, sorry) delivered, I'll try and find the seller, although I did run the risk of a random colour, lucky a white one was sent through, also go a micro SD card from curry's (16gb) for 9.99,

Just back from a rideout and quality is great, when stopped I can see detail in the tarmac, I have noticed in low light some lights have a little bloom around them, but captures detail and movement very well.

Hopefully the link works, as Rogerborg said the tech moan review is good at showing the detail, sorry I haven't uploaded a YouTube video as no doubt I'd bore you all silly.

https://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/6/9/sj1000-at-lasta-good-cheap-action-camera.html

Just spend another £10 on a decent mount that doesn't shake all over the place though.

I signed up here just to share this with you all, I saw it in another forum, they were posting about the Aldi camera so no credit to me really:

Looks like exactly the same thing for about 1/2 the price:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231080215184

Example of it in use, again noting to do with me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77IwNYu8OxI

Post here if you find any difference please, as I want one.

Looks really good but how do you know the you tube clip is from that camera?

Plus it has WiFi, but pushing the price up to £100, you could get 2 sj1000's for that.

But good camera though.

No wifi, but the SJ4000 is an outstanding camera for the price - very sharp, and does curiously well in lower light.
The box of bits you get with it is quite OTT, must be worth at least £30 if you had to buy them individually.

The person who posted in the other group stated it was from the ebay camera he had bought, so I can only go by that. I need a better picture, I want broadcast quality, I want to pay nothing for it too, obviously Smile I've seen an amazing modded GoPro with C mount lens, used in a recent film production, but they are not for sale and there seems to be only one with a serial number of 0001 Sad

PostPosted: 12:15 - 11 May 2014    Post subject: This weeks Aldi 'catalog' is out Reply with quote

This weeks Aldi 'catalog' is out, the camera looks identical physically and in specs to the eBay camera, except for the logo printed on the front of the case, although I notice this on the eBay item: Video Resolution: 720P60 = 1280 x 720, VGA =640 x 480 .. 720P60? 60 frames a second and not 30?. It could be the same case with totally different internals, always a shot in the dark, especially with items that start life in china. I bet there are some real gems out there waiting to be found.

For a really sweet camera google the Novo GoPro Hero 3 modded camera, not for sale though Sad

Good luck everyone, hope you all get what you want. Doubt I'll post again as I'm too fat, too old and too crippled to ride a bike now Sad , I want the camera for my quadcopter.

Just noticed, eBay one says SD card, Aldi one says Micro SD card, so maybe different internals?
I contacted the seller on eBay to confirm which card size, will report back here.
Don't forget you need a class C6 fast card for these sort of cameras, or sound and picture quality will drop as data gets lost when trying to write to a slow card.

Techmoan has found a couple of cameras which "record" at 60fps just by writing each 30fps frame twice. Laughing

Then lets hope these 30fps cameras don't write twice and are 15fps !!!
