Looking at buying a load of Alpinestars gear, and even with shipping from Italy it works out like 20% cheaper buying from there..

2 questions: has anyone heard of or used this site or bought from a European site? And am I right in thinking I won't have to pay any import duty or anything like that?

Nope, no import or anything, but you still pay VAT

Have you tried buying direct from alpinestars in Italy? They sold me some fastlane boots over the phone and I paid by credit card. Delivery wasn't cheap, around £20, but they were still cheaper (in the nice black) than megastore type "fill the shelves" shops were selling the awful luminous green/yellow ones in the uk. I spoke to two people on the phone to buy them and both spoke perfect English. That was actually a little annoying because I'd prepared a page of Italian ready to wow them with. Laughing

I was going to buy a helmet from them but they never got back to me on stock availability. I ended up buying from a French store www.motoblouz.com who were quick and efficient and I saved 25% on the UK price. I'd defiantly do it again when buying new gear, long live the free market.

You'll only pay the VAT in Italy for this instance AFAIK, import duty and 'stuff' only applies to Alcohol and Tobacco when importing from another EU country.

I bought a Nolan helmet (Italian) from a German website (moto.de or something) and very straightforward - just paid the price on the website and didn't have to pay anything else on delivery.

I believe the price you pay always includes VAT in the country where the website is based (or their equivalent), so you don't pay it again when it comes to the UK.

Nonsense. You pay any taxes which have to be paid in the country of purchase.

OP, you only pay buying outside the EU. You, more often than not, have to pay VAT and sometimes admin costs too.

Used to be able to get away without paying VAT or duty but those days are gone.

Okay so for instance a 1-piece suit is £600 including VAT over here, on that site it's the equivalent of around £480 including VAT at Italy's 22% rate.

So because we're both EU countries, that's all I have to pay, apart from shipping?

Well that all depends on if they charge you Euro's or not.

Don't for get your banks/card providers exchange rate charge. Thumbs Up

I've used them, I bought a pair of Rukka Argosaurus gloves from them, fairly quick delivery for a reasonable price. Would use them again no problem

Well if you use a Visa card Look here
Just ask your card provider for their currency conversion fees.

MasterCard & amex should have the same somewhere on the net Thumbs Up

Also remember that rate is calculated on date of debit, NOT date you made the transaction.

The pound is at a long time high against the Euro right now, which makes it worth looking abroad (so long as your card provider doesn't cash in on exchange fees).

I'll have a look at the rates in the morning then, see who charges what.

I've got my Barclays Visa debit, Visa Barclaycard credit card, and Tesco Mastercard credit card, so will need to compare them and see which would be best.. Ideally a credit card Neutral

I'd always recommend a CC for purchases, it offers more protection and insurance. Then just pay off in full, happy days Wink

Does it Confused

CC tend to have higher currency conversion fees.

Now, what is the "More protection & insurance" Question

Only insurance offered is a few card providers will offer 90 day purchase protection against loss or theft.

So that leaves the "More protection".

I await your reply Thumbs Up Karma

What CC have you had charging more for currency conversion? I've never seen that, it's always been less for me, you can even get CC's offers that charge nothing for exchanges like the Post Office. More here.

Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act also only applies to Credit Cards or forms of Credit (store cards etc).

Simply if you're scammed or put out because of unforseen circumstances it's coming off a credit balance and not directly from your bank account, the former is easier to deal with and has more measure in place to protect you.

There's also the cashback factor on credit cards Thumbs Up

Plenty.
Debit 2.75% Credit 2.99%.
Not much but enough.

For item purchase between £100 and £30K. Not including P&P. So 3 x £99.99 will not be covered but £100 will be For which you have to prove breach of contract and misrepresentation. As well as remembering to pay retailer direct and not use the like of PayPal or other money movement co.

You are also missing the fact that your card provider will use Visa/mastercard chargeback regulations 1st.
CCA requires you to provide a lot of info to prove your case and can take months to be resolved.
Chargebacks are on the whole a lot quicker and easier to resolve.

Other than CCA there is no difference between debit & credit cards in chargeback protection Thumbs Up

I think you might need to redo your maths.... 2.75% of £100.00 is £2.75 2.99% of £100 is £2.99

I rate my bank on customer service. Not cost.

Large purchases where there maybe issues going forward. Such as car's, kitchens etc.
Are worth it. But do not expect any issues to be resolved without a lot of work on your part.
Anything else. Not worth it.

Just a quick update guys.. Haven't ordered yet as I'm still trying stuff on and choosing sizes..

But my 1-piece, boots and gloves would cost around £980 delivered from a couple of the main online UK stores.

I spoke to Visa and Mastercard about their charges, the former is 2.9%, the latter is 2.75%, and both of their daily conversion rates are on their websites.

The same basket on the Italian site bought via Mastercard would cost £796 Cool so definitely a saving to be had there!

Can I recommend trying to haggle a little with UK suppliers? I got my SMX6 Goretex A* boots reduced by £40 just by stating how much it would cost from importing it instead of buying from the UK.

Most companies want the business, even if its a reduced profit.
