 |
|
Daft thought I had - indulge me for a sec. Imagine brake lights are outlawed tomorrow and no vehicles have them any more (APART FROM YOUR OWN BIKE) - would you change the way you ride, and if so how?
Would you allow a much further gap between you and the vehicle in front? Would you be looking further ahead for possible turn offs that the vehicle in front might take, and thus slow down for? Would you just generally try to become more aware of deceleration by other vehicles?
And, if you answered yes to some, all and (or) other similar questions, do you think it'd ever be helpful to ride as though other vehicles didn't have brake lights? If so, when (apart from when you're out of your sweet little mind on crack and booze)?
NB, as you can tell, I haven't given much of this a great deal of thought, but I'm still interested to get some replies, even if they are rude, unhelpful and reveal the replier to be part twunt, part vole. ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

I don't want to sound like Mr perfect, but I do all of the above anyway. The few times I've had to brake hard in traffic was when i let my concentration lapse and i wasn't looking ahead, but rather staring at the back of the car in front.
Also, many cars turn off without braking, some even turn off without indicating, so as I've said I keep my distance anyway.
I can't be certain if I pay more attention to the brake lights or the fact that the vehicle is physically stopping, hard to say having never ridden behind a car with no brake lights. ____________________ Current: 2009 SV650 S, 1990 Kawasaki GT550

Why? ATM they appear as optional extras on many BMW and Audi cars Either that or the driver can't find them to use
On topic, sort of, I do practice occasionally riding like I have no brakes. It is a recognised training/learning technique. It's supposed to promote smoother riding.
I also have a problem with the use of brakes in the advanced riding 'system'. That's the IPSGA one - Information, Position, Speed - where you brake, brake, brake then Gear - so you (block) shift down to match your new speed then Acceleate once corner/obstacle/kitten passed.
Now I'm in the habit of changing down but matching speed, then rolling off throttle as required to reduce speed. I feel more in control as I can then easily accelerate or scrub off speed with the brakes but already in the right gear.
Appears this is the way iooi, thx1138 and dydey90 operate so I'm not alone. As iooi said I'm looking ahead of the car(s) in front. If I see brake lights I'm already down changing and rolling off the throttle.
I guess the 'system' method can keep the revs lower, it's just odd to me as I'd rather not be (in my mind) constantly on and off the brake(s). I must try getting on another observed ride to see what the current advanced riding thinking is. Last one I did was years back.

A bit harsh when you can't always anticipate the stupidity of other road users. Although I find you can get too much red brake lights though. I hate being behind cars that brake without any apparent reason, apparent clear road, corner not that sharp, etc. I think some do it if they think you're too close I'm keeping a 2 second gap (in the dry) you moron. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Imagine if drivers had to manually switch on brake lights, the pile ups that would occur with people not bothering as it'd be oh so much trouble like with indicators.
That said, bike riders are far worse in the not indicating stakes than people in cars but then moan about it the most. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
