I'm thinking about a new set of forks for my MTB, the old ones haven't had much use however I feel I bought the wrong ones. I bought them when I was getting back into MTB and went for them because they where, I thought good bang for my buck. They are RockShox Recon Silver TK. They were amazing compared to the knackered shit that was on there before. However the more I ride the more I notice I'm too heavy for it. The preload and compression are up to max, but there isn't much adjustment. Only 3 clicks on the preload. I'm 18 Stone, so at the upper end of the charts, by all accounts I need to buy heavier springs for my forks however I was thinking about getting some air forks instead, I figure this is much easiest than hunting down a new set of springs for 3 year old forks. I would like remote lockout too just wondering if anyone had suggestions and what to look for.

I want to go S/H as new I guess I'm looking at £250+ which I don't really want to spend.

Oh, and needs to be 9mm QR, preferably 100mm and 1 1/8 and preferably black.

At your weight you will probably need to put heavier weight springs/oil/more air pressure in any fork you get anyway. I'm 16 stone and I always need to go for heavier springs/oil/more air even with products that are designed for hard dirt jump/DH use.

It's a bummer you've said it has to be a 9mm axle as I reckon you could get a decent RockShox Pike for £250 second hand but you will struggle to get one that isn't a 20mm axle. There are a lot of versions of the Pike with coil and air sprung versions so you'd need to do your research. They have just released a complete overhaul of the Pike this year so I'd imagine that the older versions will come down in price. They've been around since 2004 though so I wouldn't really go any older than 2010ish if you can help it.

They are a great all round fork. You can use them for trail riding/all mountain/whatever buzzword you want, XC and some light DH/dirt jumping. They have the remote lockout you want, rebound adjustment/motion control and also have adjustable travel.

Here are 3 that I found on ebay without really looking:

Pike 454 Air

Pike 426 Coil

Pike 351 Coil

I think the 9mm axle thing is going to hold you back quite a lot but then I don't really know much about proper XC forks so if that's what you're after you'll have to wait for someone else to chip in. There's a small chance that you will be able to convert your hub to a 20mm axle but that would depend on your hub and you being lucky!

I wanted to stick to Air as I figured I could just pump it up rather than fork out (geddit!) for need springs. Is there a way to convert Maxle to 9mm? I don't feel the need to upgrade my wheels, they seem to me to be excellent. Well nothing has gone wrong and they don't go out of true, even with my bulk smashing them about.

Yeah I understand the air fork thing (and the terrible joke Wink) - you'll probably get a better air fork recommendation when someone who knows about XC forks comes along!

You can't convert a Maxle to 9mm QR. The Maxle is like a 20mm QR and is supposed to be good from what I have heard. What front hub do you have? You might be lucky and be able to buy a kit similar to this:

Hub axle size converter kit

Then you won't need a new wheel or hub or anything like that (although possibly bearings depending on the kit, very easy to source though as they are generally standard sizes).

I think it is fairly old Deore Hub, I can't image it would be able to be upgraded.

If you're interested. On-one make a reasonably priced adaptable hub that comes with spacers to fit 9, 15 and 20mm axles.

Just wanna say these Revelations have been a revelation! It has made the front sharpen up so much on my bike, I guess I put that down to being able to set it up for my weight! The pop lock too is priceless for climbs.

It's very similar to a motorbike - good suspension and good tyres will make a massive difference to how a mountain bike feels. Trouble is that for some top of the range mountain bike forks and tyres you're not too far off some Öhlins stuff for your motobike Laughing
