Hey guys and Gals,
Im looking to visit a few used motorcycle showrooms as i need to buy a motorcycle, but scanning the internet is really tedious, so here is my question.

Where are the biggest places in and around London to buy a used motorcycles?

If anyone can provide a list that would be invaluable, ive visited a bike shop in Vauxhall and that was pretty cool, but other places ive seen only seem to have like 5 used bikes on sale.I want to see a huge range like Car Giant has but for bikes. I want to sit on enduros and other styles to see whats comfortable and what suits me, but at this rate ill be searching for months.

My mate bought a brand new Tuono from Metropolis Vauxhall and had a load of grief getting a service booklet out of them and even had to get me to research how to get the clocks changed from kmh to mph when they claimed not to know how to do it.

I'd steer clear of such piss poor service myself. They'll take your money quickly enough but be sure to walk in with your eyes open.

Pop along to something like the BMF show visitors' bike park, there will be hundreds of different bikes to try sitting on. You may have to be quick on your toes if anyone objects though.

Thanks for all your replies, yes I'm 6'2 and athletic build, I heard supermoto are pretty tall, so that's good and I love the upright riding position, I also heard I would look like a giant on the Drz! They have so many good reviews though so I hope I can fit on one nicely. I saw a crf250 at motodens website, looks pretty good, I want it just for commuting 20 miles each way into central London. I want something that is reliable enough for that and the endure supermoto kind look awesome. I'll check out those places on my day off and let you know. I'll make a list of the places I visit and post something up. Oh please let me know which bikes you think I wouldn't fit of in regards to enduros. So far the suzuki Dr650 looks like the dream, thoughts?

I want to see a huge range like Car Giant has but for bikes.

There are 60 million people in the UK, half of them own a car. Barely half a million own a bike, and half of them that do own sub 125cc ones, they ride on L-Plates.
SO... about 30 million cars in the UK, traded on average about once every three years, means around 10 million used cars coming up for sale each year.....
That's more used cars sat on dealers lots in the UK at any one time, than there are bikes on the roads... TOTAL.

You ENT going to find a used bike dealership that has anything like 'hundreds' of bikes for sale, are you?

You want to look at lots of bikes of different types and styles, you are going to have to put in the leg work and trek round the dealers and private sales kicking tyres; and you will probably have to trek somewhat further afield to do it.

I live in a small provincial town, there are probably half a dozen used car lots within ten minutes of me... there is ONE used bike dealer... half his stock is sub 125's, most of them scooters; he might have two or three more interesting 'big-bikes' on offer at any one time. If I want to see more bikes, I have to go further, and visit more dealers. Its that simple; there aren't that many bikes in the country so they are spread thinly.

Meanwhile; Super-Motards? cos you are a tall guy? So am I. Well, yes they have high saddles, true.... they tend to be that high though 'cos they are jacked up for a lot of ground clearance, on soft long travel suspension... means that saddle gets a lot closer to the floor when you sit on it... however, the foot-pegs don't get any further from the seat, and mounted high up for ground clearance, dirt-bikes can be as if not more cramped for a long-legged rider as a sports-bike.

Upright riding position? Lots of bikes have them without being dirt-bikes. And most conventional street bikes, muscle bikes or tourers all have upright rising positions, without cramping you up over the handlebars or putting your feet right under your bum while they do it. Their seat heights when actually sat on the bike, less compressed by rider weight are often little different, and their broader, firmer saddles also tend to be rather more comfortable.

You are displaying a very 'car driver' attitude and expectation towards bikes; which is wrong, I'm afraid, 'cos bikes ent cars.

Cars have more in common with domestic appliances; washing machines & Dishwashers; they are all designed to do pretty much the same mundane every day job, and the differences are in the whistles and bells and styling of them. Bikes are far more like leisure equipment; and are much more specialised as well as less common.

Most motorcycles over 125cc these days are sold as leisure equipment, not practical means of every-day transport.

For example, when you apply for an insurance quote for a bike these days; the tick boxes will typically suggest, as default, an average mileage of up to 3,000 miles, as that is the average annual, as opposed to cars, that average around 15,000. The default will also exclude 'commuting to normal place of work' as again, MOST bikes don't get used for commuting any more; but purely as leisure equipment.

Sad state of affairs BUT, most bikes now-a-days are sunny day toys; and bikes are built for this role; and this lets them make bikes that are less every day practical, comfortable and economical, and make them more 'exiting'.

So I think you need to stop trying to apply car analogies to them; think more like Golf Clubs or fishing Rods... cos I believe that there are more regular Golfers and more regular anglers in the UK than there are motorcyclists! And about all we share with cars is petrol, wheels and the public road.

20 miles a day? 100 miles a week? 5,000 miles a year?

Sort of bike you would be advised to get for that sort of work is a low maintenance longer haul 'commuter'... cos that's the 'use' you want to put it to. And that is likely to be not particularly exiting to look at or ride. But.... damn site more pleasurable on the way to work, or when you don't have to take time off work to get another major service done or take time out to buy yet another set of ridiculously expensive and short lived tyres.

So, as far as my purchasing priorities were concerned; I would not be so concerned about how I think I might look when I sit on it...

Daily commuter grind ent no fashion show, and you are lucky if half awake car drivers even SEE you and not knock you off! So they sure as fuck dont care what you look like and whether that look is particularly 'stylish'!

I would be worrying how much my insurance was going to be if I unchecked the box declaring the bike to be used for every day commuting to regular place of work, and probably doubling or more the suggested annual mileage.... (and I'm an old duffer, with cheap insurance that barely costs more than my tax-disc!)

Then I would be worrying about how often I would have to oil and tension the drive chain, cos on a bit of leisure equipment intended for Sunny-Sunday riding... pressed into daily service, they could be once a week, while minor services, with oil and filter changes could be as often as once a month!

Tank Range, would be of interest as well. Dirt-Bikes tend to have rather small tanks. My last one, and one I still have barely hold a gallon of go-juice... good for a couple of hours messing about in the woods... but 'range', at 60 to the gallon? You'll probably be filling up twice a week just to get to and from work; and if you take the long way home one night or have a little trundle out, better remember to fill up before you get home; 'cos you don't want to be running onto reserve on your commute.

Like I said, bikes ent cars; like sporting equipment, they are designed and refined much more specifically for particular roles, not just aping a style, like cars do.

So you are going to have to put in the leg work to go look at lots of bikes, and if you want to limit that leg work, and get strategic, then you need to short list by the practical priorities of what you want them to do, first, rather than what you want them to look like.

And I would steer you away from sports-bikes, dirt-bikes, cruisers and other 'specialised' motorcycles, towards more conventional commuters, street-bikes or muscle bikes and tourers as they are the ones most likely to be more suitable to the job you want the bike to do.

And heed the suggestion... no-one gives a fig what you look like.... most of the bugga's just DONT LOOK anyway!

Plenty of bikes that would suit you other than supermoto... That have far better service intervals. Lower running costs, lower ins costs.

Kawasaki Versys.
Suzuki V-Storm
BMW G - 650

To name but 3....

Personally adding commuting has not increased my ins premium, but then again I do not commute into London. Which may make a major difference.

Was also going to suggest this. Theres also another place a bit further south along that same road (on the opposite side though) which has quite a few although mainly scooters (for the life of me cant remember what its called. Dobles Honda out in Purley normally has quite a mixed sleection.

Also have heard very mixed things about Metropolis in Vauxhall so I'd be wary about buying from them.

https://www.inmoto.com/ These guys normally have a fair few too.

I've owned all 3 of those Smile

I'm 6' 2" and of a fat build Wink - V-Strom is the best of those 3 but also consider the Honda NC700/750 (my current bike) - almost as quick as those 3 and 70+ mpg easily achievable.

If you can be bothered to travel, Fins of Redhill have about 100 non-moped used bikes in their showroom...they're a few miles further south than Doble's who have a decent number as well (although mostly Honda).

Although, check their websites before you travel obviously...

Teflon-Mike thanks for your methodical approach to my question appreciate it, i have an open mind so will be looking for other bikes also, not just supermotos. In regards to the small tanks, im not too fussed as we have petrol stations everywhere in London, but a semi descent tank would be nice yes. I know its not a fashion show LOL! and yes ive been driving cars for years so no wonder i think like a driver, but all thats going to change.

j.silvs your a star ill be checking them all out for sure.

iooi and nelmo good selection ive been looking at those actually, i sat on the VERSYS and felt real nice. whats wrong with athletic build?

Irezumi aka Reuben cheers its on the list now.

and thanks to all the other replies.

Here is another question that relates to it all aswell

I live in a terraced house, i have enough space for a motorcycle outside my living room where the bins are kept, but there is one thing, there is a step up from the pavement under a foot in height. Im worried about security so i don't want to leave the bike on the road, incase its stolen. So i need to be able to get it up that step without it grinding against the underneath of the bike, then i can install an anchor. So do any of you guys have the same problem? I was thinking a could make a small ramp of some kind that i can move after as i cant lave it on the pavement.

There are a few about, most have been mentioned. From my experience with those places, I'd say yeah its convenient to see and try out alot of bikes at once, but be ready to pay well over the odds for what you get.

Research the bike you want so you know the true value of it for it's age/mileage etc so you'll know if your getting ripped off.

I'm sure those places just whack £500+ on top of whatever the bikes actually worth and then just hope some mug walks in and pays it.

Hey guys,

based on all the info you guys gave me regarding good used (and new) motorcycle dealers in and around London I made a map which highlights some good places, i also added a couple more which seem to have a pretty decent range. Obviously this isn't extensive and there are loads i have missed out, but if you believe there should be one included that should be in here, please let me know. Please share around if you think its ok, but we can add way more and make it awesome!!

THE MAP OF BIKE DEALERSHIPS IS AN ATTACHMENT

John's of Romford has two locations about two miles from one another, the one you haven't arrowed has the bigger range I reckon.
