Sorn and tax?

Been recently made unemployed so I will not be paying to continue to insure my vehicle. Apparently uninsured vehicles need to be declared SORN. If this is true then how does this effect my tax? Some scrote has nicked my tax disc so I cannot send it back for refund.

If and when I do find work, can I just unSORN it and continue with whats left of my VED?

As car as I am aware the rules have changed recently. If you sorn a vehicle now as far as I am aware any remaining tax becomes void. When I bought my bandit it was on a sorn but with a current tax disc on the vehicle. I made some calls to the dvla and apparently as the bike had been sorned the tax was void and I had to purchase a new tax disc.

I have a bike on sorn but didn't cash in the tax. Thought it would be easier when I sell it but not got round to advertising it yet. It's later in the year when son means automatic refund on tax and also you tax is void when you sell.

I wrote to the DVLA about this exact point. They are of the opinion that you can only declare SORN if tax has expired or if you surrender the tax. However, my studies of the relevant legislation reveals nothing that states that declaring SORN somehow cancels an existing VED. That said, whilst you may be able to convince a magistrate, I suspect that conversation on the side of the road with the police may not go so well. Besides, all this said, even if there is remaining time on the VED, regardless of the whole SORN thing you will still fall foul of 'failure to display' the tax disc.
