I'm going insane here! We have BT infinity and when we first got it, fucking brilliant, now, all it does is fucking work when it wants to!

I'm no tech genius and last year discovered powerline adapters but one of them randomly fucking died and now my 2nd set replaced under warrenty by Scan which is the fucking V.2 of the fucking things has now decided they can't find each other! Rolling Eyes

I thought I'd throw my wifi adapter back in but it doesn't get much signal and the entire house can no longer get a fucking connection.

WHAT DO?

Is this the modem/wifi shit thing they gave you?

https://i.imgur.com/59fLMhRl.jpg

I had a house call a couple of weeks back where the client was getting massive wifi problems with it.

I sent them to PC World to get an ASUS RT-N66U N900 Dual Band Wireless Router
https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/networking/networking/cable-wireless-routers/asus-rt-n66u-n900-dual-band-wireless-router-20876901-pdt.html

Bit pricey, but sorted the problem out. It is a cracking router.

WHAT DO?

I've had success with these powerline adaptors. Using three in a fairly old house at the moment. Time to buy replacements?

My router is no where near my PC and as I live at home still (le sigh) I can't run a 50ft cable to my room hence the powerline adapters stinkwheel.

I'm a complete spacker when it comes to networking as I have never had to install one, Yes almighty CaNsA it is the heap of shit home hub (version we still can't fucking get it right.0002) with the white box underneath it which I swear overheats and I could punch right through it, proper cheap shit.

What would I need to do and how?

You only need 1 long cable.

Run it round the edge of the room, up and over all doorways.
That's what I've done, the missus didnt seem to mind. Thumbs Up
It can be tucked under skirting boards for extra stealth.

If you are going to do it wait until everyone has fucked off for a couple of hours. Fit the cable, hide it as best you can, then just wait.
I bet you get atleast 2 months out of it before someone notices it, by that time you can be all "stfu yo bitches. 2months so fuck you"

Or, buy that router I linked above and use wireless.
It will replace the black box.
The white box will plug into it.

It has a cracking wifi range and you can do funky geeky nerdy things with it, but you dont need to know about them.

Complain to BT that the router WiFi keeps cutting off, with the WiFi light on the router turning off. Humour them with all the self checks ect & they may just send you a new V5 home hub. However they may request to send an engineer to visit which would benefit you as they would check out anything else causing issues, agree to it & explain to the engineer on the day that the WiFi light turns OFF intermittently.
If the engineer has an ounce of common sense he'll replace the Home Hub with a V5.
The V5 hub has the VSDL modem (White box) built into it & an ever so slightly better WiFi range without compromising on strength.

If that fails or you CBA. Time to spend money on cabling (RJ45/RJ11) or the brilliant Asus* router Cansa linked Thumbs Up

Buy a pair of TP-Link powerline adaptors.
Clicky

I've installed dozens of these.

Cheap and never a single problem

Using those here as well. Once you have set them up they work fine.

Just a question, but have you changed the wireless channel that your router sends its signal out on? Can be very beneficial. There is a free app from Google Play called Wifi Analyzer that recommends the best wireless channel for you.

If it works, not a penny spent.

Good luck, dude.

Our BT HomeHub just works fine.

Though I still use cables, I have lots and lots and lots of cable if you want me to make you one.

pound land are doing belkin 10m cat5e crossover cables and 7ft (labelled as apple compatible?) cat6 cables at the minute.

You don't have to run the cables through the house, just drill a hole and run them up the exterior wall.

If that isn't an option move the router closer to your room and cable off it then.

best bet would be learn how to make your own network cables. as long as a single run does not exceed 100m and you done have to drill oversize wholes to get the cable through due to the rj45 still being on the end of the wire.

as bt home hub, they are an arse, the one i had would not keep port open, they made it near impossible to forward a port or perminetly assign and IP to certian machine on the netwrok, only go know how it would have gotton on with an unmanaged switch gigbit switch being connected to it

Ethernet is now giving me massive issues, randomly disconnecting etc but if I turn the powerline adapter on/off or turn the ethernet port on/off on my motherboard I can use the internet again until it spit's the dummy out. Not so sure it its the homehub or my mobo or the power line adapters, it seems to disconnect every hour at 00:03 and 00:15 or 00:24 and is making simple tasks difficult, as stated earlier wifi is out of bounds for me so I'm a bit lost on what to do next really.

Right, listen up dipshit.

You can't use WiFi
Powerline adapters are not working for you
Your mum won't let you run a hidden cable to your room

I guess you're shit outta luck unless you invent a new method of transmitting data.

Thanks, that really helped, I'm glad you spoke to me like a cunt cos it's helped me so well. It's not my property to start drilling holes into the walls to run cables all over the shop for my needs. I pulled out both powerline adapters, run a few checks on my motherboards ethernet adapter and it seems to be holding out. Maybe if you could of pulled your dick out your own arse for a sec and called me out on my network settings it would of been a bit more helpful.

If you asked me for help with one of your bikes, I wouldn't come over to your house and dance round your garage calling you a dipshit and pointing at another bike... Wink

in my experience the BT home hub can't handle more than a handful of devices. Everytime we go round a friends (who is an openreach engineer) if more than two of use try to connect everything goes down. Do what CaNsA says and get a better router.

And TUG you are being a cunt. pipe down you silly little boy. we're trying to help.

there is another option that we have all overlooked, move out, get your own place and do whatever the hell you like.

I have ehternet running all over the place, wifi is tricky due to the granite that my house is built with.

either run the ehternet, get a decent router, move out or stop bitching like a little girl

I can't get a better router just yet but it is on the cards, trust me, I'm very well aware that the hub is shit having had several of them but I've only just gotten to grips with what is needed thanks to the thread, but when I say, I can't use a 100m cable then it's suggested to use one, I simply can't *shrugs* what do you want me to do? No one has asked me where it's sat and why I can't drill holes up into the roof. The brick wall is very thin and right next to the front door, the hall is wooden floor, my room is the one at the top of the stairs, I would have to go into a void which would need a lot more work than simply setting the network up correctly and resetting the powerline adapters which are running strong and I've had no random disconnect.

So all in all, while advice has been given on replacing parts has been duly noted, it didn't solve my problem, no one asked me if I had the latest drivers or how the adapter was configured, I've even thanked people for the info so I'm not really being a cunt about it and if I am I apologise. I reiterate, I can't use a cable, the wifi won't reach on the hub, since switching to better PLA it's been a more stable experience until recently which I enquired about, as far as I know the hub didn't like my settings in windows 7.
