Does anyone on here do it?

Only just started myself in a bid to stop my lil lad from being a minecraft addict in the guise of 'treasure hunting'

he absolutely loved it, went to a couple of parks on Sunday, found a trackable item from germany which i'm dropping in a cache in switzerland in a couple of weeks,

seems a good way/excuse to visit places you'd not normally wander/ride to,

I dabble. I'll rarely go out looking for one specifically, but if I'm out with the Borglets somewhere I'll usually fire up c:geo on my phone and then whip them with a willow cane to make them grub under rocks and tree roots and such.

Do it now and again but we tend to do one then forget about doing another for a year or so.

I'm amazed how many there are out there, staggering to see how it's taken off.

Is that the same as dogging? Confused
The voices in my head are sure you mean dogging. Wink Very Happy

On topic I've thought about it as there are apparently a few caches in the area. Not motivated enough to do it though. Too busy with life getting in the way of hobbies.

Never heard of it until now.

A few years ago I did a Uni project for pitching a 'reality' game that was similar, you had to run around a city and do missions etc. with a GPS locator. We planned to do it in Ghent in Belgium at the time.

First thought I had was someone, at some point, has taken a dump in the cache...

I've heard about geocaching but never really took a look until now. Looks like it could be fun and there's quite a few locally. If the weather clears up, something for the weekend! Thumbs Up

Keep reading the thread title as Gouching - a somewhat different activity than the one suggested (if my ex gf was anything to go by).

Laughing

went on a trip over to glossop on the bike with the woman, good excuse to go somewhere i'd never have bothered to,

once parked up did a hike/search that took about 3 hours, up a stream, up a massively steep hill, which when we got to the top, had another big hill to climb for a cache at the top, roughly 430 meters above sea level, fantastic view but climbing a hill that was approaching vertical with bike gear on and carrying a lid...not the easiest Shocked, was rated 4 out of 5 on both terrain and difficulty.

I was too busy giggling at the names though, going from 'shittern clough' up to 'cock hill' Laughing

found 5 caches on the walk, decided i'd been too healthy doing all the climbing and walking so scoffed a big pizza when I got home

I've been caching for a couple of years now. It started off as a bit of a techy kind of hobby, and then developed into a bit of an obsession with notifications of new caches causing me to drive to new places to get the First to Find. I've even planned holidays around it. Wife wanted to go on a cruise last year, but I used the trip to get caches in Finland, Germany, Estonia and Russia... Shocked

Now I'm coming up to my 500th find and as a bit of a history buff, I tend to go to places with some historical interest. But there are some local cachers with find totals in the tens of thousands!

It's well worth doing it if you have young kids as they enjoy the "treasure hunt" side of it too. Actually this sounds a bit pedobear...

I bought an eTrex GPS for about £80, just before I bought a smartphone, which made the eTrex fairly redundant. I used the eTrex to find one local geocache then lost interest.

Then I muggled a geocache. I saw this big white fake-looking rock on the grass in the middle of nowhere when on a dogwalk with the ex, and thought "that does not belong there". I went to investigate... turned it over, hollowed out plastic rock with a geocache inside.

Within a month, in a nearby field, I glimped a bit of camo sheeting at the back of a tree, thought "hmm", and discovered another (badly hidden) geocache.

So my current score is one deliberately found geocache, and two accidentally found geocaches (good obs). Very Happy

Registered on geocaching.com the other day off of the back of this thread and have been out just locally with my 6 year old, she loves it! Three finds so far and I'm enjoying it as much as her. Found a genius idea for a container today, little slip of paper inside a big nut with a small magnet replacing a bolt head on a bench.

There is one no more than twelve metres from our house which we cant find, frustrating is not the word!
