If anyones interested in a cheap helmet cam setup to capture any incidents/accidents I can recommend one of those 808 cameras.

Video (Nothing interesting happens):
And excuse the fact I've mounted it wonky in the helmet!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox7VpyKGO0g

I bought an 808 #16 HD camera from eBay for £25
A cigarette lighter to USB adapter for £3 eBay
A 32Gb memory card for £16.99 (Play.com)
A 1.5Meter USB cable for £1.99 eBay

Total cost: £46.98

If you got the #3 version (non-HD) of the 808 (£9) and a lower capacity MicroSD card, you could get useable footage for less than £15 all in!

Advantages

Pretty discreet, its mounted like this in my helmet:

https://ccgi.pendulum.plus.com/helmet.jpg

I can use it in my car too, easily transferable and held in place with velcro

I bought a 12V cigarette lighter to USB adapter on eBay, disassembled it, and soldered + and - wires from the bikes electrics directly to it (and a switch to turn it on and off), so this adapter gets its power from the bike when I turn the switch on, so it can power my helmetcam indefinitely via the USB lead.

Records 10 hours of footage on my 32Gb card when plugged in

Records about 30mins of footage when running off its inbuilt battery (not plugged in)

Pretty good video and sound

-

Disadvantages

Not sure how the USB socket is going to stand up against bad weather (I've tried to weatherproof it a bit, it might be ok) but you can buy proper weatherproof ones with caps on.

I have to plug myself in and out when getting on/off the bike if I'm using the lead to power it. But this could be solved by powering the camera from an external battery pack in your jacket pocket, I will look in to this as it would be a lot easier and they're cheap enough.

So gets a thumbs up from me for a good CHEAP helmet cam.
And the way I've set mine up, its got some advantages over the much more expensive ones, e.g. long recording time, being discreet etc[/img]

Quality looks brilliant compared to some of the cheaper cameras that are around.
Are there any bike specific mounts that you can get for this?

Yeah, despite what I said in the video the quality of footage is actually really good (when viewed in 1080p)
I've got a #11 as well as the #16 and that's good also.

No mounts as far as I know, it's a very small camera and it's up to you to get busy and make your own mount for it. Several threads about the 808 with mounting ideas https://www.rcgroups.com/aerial-photography-128/

Just checking I'm not being a massive twat, but you are meaning the 'keyfob' ones, right?

Footage looks fine but I'll wait until they drop to a tenner Laughing

I'm surprised that you appear to have used a really thick USB lead. Any reason?

I had one of the standard definition ones last year. Took it out the fob because I couldn't mount it properly inside my helmet. It soon stopped working, which was a shame. What I'd like to do it extend the ribbon attached to the camera so there's more places to position it and a lot more flexibility. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Good video, actually very clear picture, and like the power-idea.

This guy claims that the #11 is the only real HD version, unless its out of date, which i assume it is. Helpfull review though.

Yeah, that's out of date now, Techmoan has actually done a #16 review since then, I remember watching it Wink

I have both the #11 and #16 and can't really decide which is better, I think the #16 has slightly clearer daytime footage but they're both great cameras.

My #16 is fussy on USB cables, my 5mtr and a couple of my cheapie USB leads cause it to error out and stop recording, I believe this is down to voltage drop, if the lead is too long or of poor quality it won't work. That's why I ended up with that thick lead, it works!

Used it again today, mounted nice and straight this time, it's a cracking little camera, I reckon it gives most camera systems costing several £££ a run for their money

This guy also shows where to buy it.
Im definatly going to buy one of these, seems to be good enough to consider over some of the more high priced cameras. The only downside seems to be the case that its in.
