Quick Q.

Insured my previous bike (Honda CBR125) back in mid January, paid in the one go for about £350 fully comp yada yada. Called up MCE to get a quote on the Yamaha 600 2 weeks ago and they wanted an additional £350 to swap me over.

I'd already found Devitt via gocompare.com which would do it for £300 so I told MCE since they couldnt match / beat I'd move on and they said they would send a cancellation thingy for me to sign and return.

2 weeks later nothing has appeared so called them back and they said they didnt have a note I wanted to cancel. Girl on the phone went through the spiel and said out of the £350 I'd be entitled to a refund of £45 :O

Seems you get arse raped if you pay up front in the one go and then upgrade bike later down the line and dont like their pricing.

Now what I was told by a colleague in work is since I've changed from BikeSure in November on my CBF to MCE in January and now on to Devitt 2 weeks ago I've not accumulated any no claims bar the 2 weeks on my current policy - is this right?

He also says for the sake of £45 if this is the case just keep the policy running till next January where I'll have 1 year no claims.

Whats the thoughts on all the shenanigans ?

A confused Rikki

MCE iirc are 125 specialist/dealers so to change to anything other than another 125 you will get raped because it's not in their ballpark. They have a reputation for this but sucker young/first time riders in with cheaper insurance.

You do only accumulate no claims for full year(s) in my experience (I've never heard of part years, others may correct that).

Also iirc the jury's out on the legality of having insurance on a bike that isn't now yours. As new owner will also get insurance. Again, others may correct that. If bike still yours then just SORN it once insurance expires/cancelled.

For me if you have taken out new insurance without saying you had the no claims from MCE then I'd just say sorted and get at least £45 back. This as I imagine hard to retrospectively add one years no claims to a policy that's already running (and accruing no claims).

I have had nothing but a good experience from MCE! Even throughout my claim and any other queries I have had!

Might just be me tho

In the past we've left the insurance running after selling a bike.
When we looked into the legalities of that (didn't look deeply I'll add), it appeared to be ok, just that you cannot have 2 insurance claims for the same bike. Which of course you wouldn't want to.

Yes, you do. I do try to raise this issue when the merits of spending time on a tiddler are being touted. Sad

Cheer up, you'd get raped even harder on a "monthly" policy, since you're paying off a loan that was used to pay for the annual policy, and you'll still owe that money regardless.

Yes. If you don't make it to a full year (or less for some "bonus accelerator" policies), you earn nothing.

You can do. There is a small risk though. Any insurer who's providing 3rd party indemnity on that bike remains liable to pay out, regardless of who is riding it or the circumstances of the claim.

It shouldn't be an issue if the new owner has it insured themselves and stacks it into some lawyered up kittens. Their liability, their policy should indemnify them.

But what if they don't bother insuring it? Or their policy is cancelled? Or what if some ned TWOCs it and piles into a bus stop? Your underwriter may remain wholly or partially liable, and they will not be best chuffed. Worst case, they can sue you to recover their pay out.

(All of this is explicit in the Road Traffic Act 1988, I should mention)

As I say, small risk. I've left policies running for a few weeks before moving them to a new vehicle. Months, I'd think twice, especially on a bike liable to be rider by ne'er-do-wells.

Yes it does. No way out of it, I've been caught out twice in the same way. And from different companies. It's all in the t&c's so technically they are not robbing you blind, just robbing.

A little surprised they're only giving £45 back, how much of the policy is left to run?

I cancelled a policy with them once 6 months in and they repaid me roughly half of the original sum proportionate to the overall fee (£66 out of £130) and that was on a 600, must depend on the underwriter I figure.

Been with MCE for a couple of years now and no major issues. They're a bit fucking thick on paperwork but that's to be expected from the type of fucktards that usually work in them places.

Not had to claim though...

This sounds about right. I had exactly the same as OP; they were cheapest for my ybr125 but when I upgraded to a 500cc nine months later they wanted an extra >£300 for the remaining 90 days when Devitt quoted me the same amount for a full year.

Pretty much had to suck up the cost of cancelling as a necessary albeit annoying cost of wanting to travel faster than 64mph.

I'll just suck their length for the no claims then.
