Looking to buy my first bike. I know pretty much nothing about bike mechanics, but love the KH. I've seen one for a decent price, but it has a broken kick shaft.

How much am I looking to spend on labour costs to get this fixed and running? The seller says he has the part required for the job.

From what i've researched, it could be a big job, with the engine casing having to be taken off and from there all I read didn't make much sense at all.

Also, a 'brake piston kit' is supplied with the bike and needs replacing and a rear tyre too. Any idea how much this would cost? Not including parts?

Cheers, any advice would be great. Bike only £500 so don't mind having to spend £200 on it all but anything over that i'm not sure it will be worth it.

Thanks a lot!

Ash.

Ah, if you were close I have a FREE tyre, but I definitely do not want to post Laughing

The shaft would be splitting the cases. Pricey shit. I would just bump it, takes 2mph and is easy as pie. Depends how uncool you want to look.

Expect to spend the £500 + another £350 realistically. More if you don't want to rebuild yourself.

Kickstart shaft should just be a case of removing the side case and replacing it...new gasket and replace.....depending on how easy the casing bolts come out I'd say an hours labour. It's an air cooled single 2t.....things don't get any more simple.

As for the brake piston....similar amount of time if no complications but I'd be tempted to put new seals in at the same time if the pistons shot chances are the seals won't be far behind!

I'm guessing your not used to using spanners and so long as the KH is in reasonable nick they are an ideal starting point to learn how to do your own maintenance and most parts are pretty reasonable so cheap transport is what they do best......I would suggest buying a screw in flywheel puller tho as you'll need one at some point if it's a points and condenser setup. The puller will cost you less than £10 on eBay

Having watched one require this, it needed to be split.

Seems your right! Oh well that flywheel puller is going to be needed then!

Indeed, would definitely grab a puller, it is a pain to remove otherwise Thumbs Up

Personally, bump starting would be top of my list.

The only experience I have with tools is putting up my wardrobe and an old mechano set. I did have a bash at taking apart an old Amstrad computer in my early years but gave up putting it back together after ogling its innards.
So i'm thinking it's probably best I take it to a repair shop. As long as I can bump start it that is.
Convince me otherwise?

I've done a little more research and cant seem to find any sort of guide for doing what it is I need to do...

Spent 2 years bump starting my KH125, as the kickstart shaft was bent. splitting the cases is required. I used to bump start it in about a 10 metre run. its so easy to start I could put it in top gear on the centre stand and spin the back wheel and the bike would start Laughing

Would like to get into the mechanics one day but for my first bike id rather something which runs.

Thanks for your help. I'll let yall continue with your technobabble now Wink
