Saw this a day or two ago.

At first I thought, "Bullshit."

Then the advert slowly sold itself on me.

Then I remembered, "Bullshit." Laughing

Of course it's fantastic in theory, but to build and maintain those things would be a gigantic and surely impossible drain on resources. Not to mention it would hardly do anything more than provide a nifty manipulable ground lighting/information system for a road. The extra power will hardly be enough to power the country. I think the claim that a solar powered road network would power the country (U.S.) three times over is totally bogus.

And that's where you as an investor come up. Thumbs Up Laughing

Considering how energy intensive and bad for environment (nasty chems used in production) PV panels are, using them to replace tarmac would be an absolutely hideous idea.

Take all that murrican enthusiasm, go out into nevada and go the solar-thermal route to just put steam through a turbine. It's much better for the environment than PV panels and actually outputs a useful AC voltage rather than DC which has to be rectified before it can be used.

Regardless of the solar credentials, i'd like to hear what the tyre manufacture industry think of this.. tyres have (as we know) gone through years of development for use on tarmac - and not much else, i'd find it very hard to believe that the textured glass offers the same friction and grip properties as tarmac does.

Nice idea in principal, but i doubt it will gain much traction (pun intended) other than the odd car park or rich person's driveway.

its a bit pie in the sky at the moment, and im sure it'll be fought by the companies who make asphalt, who already fight concrete for road surfaces,
but using recycled glass is a good way to keep the foot print low,
as a sparky, i would think the maintanence time would be pretty high,
and imagine the down time when a road has to be closed because a few dozen little panels need to be replaced,

saying that, i think it could be used for peoples driveways ect
as to how long it would take before there is a viable cheap version, who knows

This obnoxious video with all its horseshit science is being liked and shared to hell and back on Arsebook.

The stupid cunt loves the sound of his voice so much that he hasn't even seen that heated runways for airports is a shit idea, never mind millions of miles of roads around the world.

I like how he talked about no pollution. Well, I'm no expert, but to produce these panels one needs quite a lot of toxic chemicals, doesn't he?

It is what it is, an 'murican idea at it's best.

IMO, solar PV, along with ground level wind turbines, are a cynical scam that burns fossil energy up front in order to recoup some of it back later.

I've never seen an ecohippy grasp the nettle that "renewables" need to produce not just more energy than it takes to make them (whatever voodoo you use to calculate that), but enough excess to power the infrastructure and lives of the humans involved in that process. I welcome correction.

My concerntroll is that hands will be waved, figures fudged and palms greased until we've bet the farm on "renewables" that aren't.

This guy did some calculations to see how well the alternatives would keep the UK going. He's a professor of engineering at Cambridge university, which I hope gives him some credibility.

He tried to keep it unbiased, which was good, but I think deep down his message was clear: Everyone cut back drastically on their energy consumption and switch to clean but low-yielding alternatives, or remain at current levels and embrace nuclear.

I actually think the 'green reality' isn't all that bad. It's just a matter of lifestyle choice. I spent some time at a fairly 'hippy' place in India which was entirely powered by solar panels. They had enough for lighting at night and had wifi Internet, they grew their own food, and in general it was a very nice place. They only turned the (solar powered) battery units on for a few hours at specified times, but it was still totally fine. I suppose the only bonus for those guys was that it's tropical climate so they can survive like that much more easily.

Although I reckon colder climates would in fact be able to reduce their power consumption to 'green' levels too, without having to go full-caveman. The only real blocking factor is the reality that nobody is willing to cut down to such lower energy consumption.

I suppose someday in a few thousand years if/when nuclear fuel runs out our ancestors will have to make those compromises, and at least, in my experience so far, it isn't actually that cataclysmic. The only major problem, come to think of it, is that people (well, governments), will want to maintain their happy status quo instead of just adapting, and so lots of war and killing will happen first.

I've said it before (maybe not on here though, can't remember); I think the future is nuclear, fusion to be precise, but we need something between now and then - say 50-60 years. That is likely to be a mixture of fossil, renewable and now fracked gas. Renewables (even solar roads) will never be enough to cover demand, but they are a good bonus to add on top.

Ideally I would like to see everyone have some solar or wind or tidal local to them, for most people it will be solar. Just enough to make up a proportion of their use. If we can get around the legality of islanding homes as well (so that your solar panels actually feed your home when there's a brownout, rather than supplying the grid and not being fed back) that would be good. Then when the fusion revolution comes we won't actually need the renewables any more, but we'll all be used to it, so we'll be generating locally in your house, maybe with some town-wide CHP systems, then national fusion to supplement at night etc.

Because I live in the UK and I'm a sucker for all the vices the modern energy-guzzling world provides! And there's nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. I didn't ever actually say we all must cut back and live as hippies. I just said it may someday be an inevitability, and it wasn't that bad at all when I tried it. We'll all be long dead before it occurs anyway.

I was at this community place for a month or two. Some people have been there for years. It really isn't bad at all. To be honest I do sometimes consider trying to live like that after I graduate. There are a places like it in the UK already. I accept it's kind of unnecessary at the moment though because we do have the energy and technology etc to live more comfortably. However one thing these hippies do manage is to live away from 'the system', not needing to join the rat race and work silly hours to 'earn' their food or shelter.

EDIT: In reality, when the time comes I'll probably join the rat race like everyone else Laughing . But I don't think the 'alternative' ideals or lifestyles of these people are bad by any stretch.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but they rarely accept them in lieu of salary.

Which is the problem with all this Good Life noncery: it's all fine and good as long as there are enough of us supporting a 21st century infrastructure to bail them out.

That said, I'd still rather have spongers growing cabbages than watching Jeremy Kyle.

Need power? 3 words: nuclear power plant.
It's clean, quiet, safe and very efficient. Burning coal or waste is none of those things. Thumbs Up

Now, I expect you to go mental on me.

I agree. The few incidents we've had have been flukes, or caused by out of date or improper compliance to regulations - even so the number of deaths is far less than those caused by coal mines!

Fusion is even less dangerous than fission. Thumbs Up

Have always agreed this. When I was doing some Chem Eng modules in my undergrad we managed to get on a tour around Sellafield. It was a power plant but now it gets the waste from lots of Euro countries and recycles it. IIRC 98%+ of the waste gets recycled to go back into a reactor for 10 years. It's magic.

I'd be more than happy for them to plant some waste under my house, a good few feet of lead and concrete would protect me but it would provide free heat for my house. I stood above a storage tube thingy, with a giga counter not moving at all and felt the warmth. MAGIC I tells ya

To be fair, to get uranium you do have to have a mine and a deep one, very deep one. There are a few in Czech republic. Communists sent there political prisoners to dig that uranium out.
