Just passed my CBT and got myself a nice Honda NSR 125 Foxeye JC22.......but it needs a new gearbox ...have seen a few decient reconditioned and second hand ones as honda new prices are shocking .....the only issue is they all say for the 1994-2001 JC20 models...will this fit mine?? Arnt they pretty much the same apart from cosmeticaly?? Mine is a 2002 model and would have been mint if the previous owner had acually put some oil in it before I rode her home ....any help greatly recieved.

Was still able to get 2,3,4,5 but not 1st or 6th gear...when mechanic took it to bits he said it was fecked and was quoting me prices for a new one but said I would see If I could get a second hand one..........

mechanic is talking shit and trying to get you shell out for new bits you don't need, most likely.

If you can find some gears but not all then the box isn't totally fucked, chances are that either the shift drum is worn or there's something wrong with the selector forks.

Bike gearboxes aren't like car engine ones. They are extremely simple mechanically.

You can buy NSR gearbox bits on ebay, if you tell us where you're from then maybe a helpful BCFer would come round and fix it for you, for a lot less than a mechanic would.

Im in Dumfries in south west scotland and he came highly recomended!!! I also work in security and turned up in full uniform with my boss who is a big lump of a lad so dought this guy taking the micheal mouse but then again????? Maybe a second opionion a good idea as I though it would be a selector problem as was running nice with the other gears just wouldnt go down in to first or up into 6th...5th was a bit dodgy too but a new gear box...hmmmmm???

The gearbox is easy to fix.
If the engine is already in half then even more so.
The gearboxes are almost identical.
When I had mine in half a little while back, I was using the service manual for the JC20 and all the same parts/washers etc came apart in the same order etc.
However the actual cogs/forks etc may not be the same so I wouldn't risk getting a JC20 gearbox however you can use the JC20 service manual to guide you through putting it back together again.

I would personally recommend getting the engine back, going over all the parts and checking against the service limits in the manual and looking for anything bent/buggered and putting it back together yourself.
Will take a little longer but save you a fortune in time and you'll learn a thing or two about the engine

Its a 2 stroke, their pretty straight forward and with a few NSR gurus on here you're not likely to go wrong if you ask about anything you don't understand


Ps, to actually answer your question, unless something has come lose/detonated in your gearbox and chewed up everything then chances are you would only need to replace a few select parts to get the gearbox running again
