looks like he doesn't see the merc stopping as he comes up behind at speed. brake, skid, overcook it and spin.

I'm guessing silver car came to a halt in front of him and he decided to floor it to get out in front of the car in the adjacent lane. Unfortunately owing to being RWD, the sudden burst of throttle caused the wheels to spin and the back end stepped out. Confused and panicked, the driver kept his foot buried on the throttle, exacerbating the situation, the result being a car spinning wildly out of control and sideways up a curb, causing all manners of bending to structurally/functionally important parts.

Looking at it again, it looks as though he goes to move into the lane with the merc, realises the merc isn't moving and tries to swerve around him. Could be locking up under brakes, but I thought all this ABS gubbins was supposed to stop this sort of thing.

I think he realised as he accelerated that the merc had stopped, swerved whilst still accelerating and spun the car. Lucky he didn't hit any pedestrians cos that went up the kerb with quite some speed, would have knocked anyone flying
