End of the world bike

Ok what bike would you choose if it was the end of the world, however there are a few perimeters.

1. Preferably be a sports bike (but other bike types will do)
2. Got to carry items for trading with a few other people (when you can, you can use a backpack).
3. Got to look cool.

Preferably from the 80's/early 90's.

Why does it have to be a sports bike?

Longer travel suspension for better ground clearance.

Okay. I would choose an FZR600R. Because that's the bike I know most about mechanically.

Would have my soft luggage on the back. One for essentials, the other for carrying a bag of dicks to trade with. Would also carry a small backpack with various items.

500cc two-stroke twin. Direct injection bearings. Reliable as hell, simlicity itself in terms of construction. Will carry anything you want. Cool as fuck.

Or an early VFR750 on account of the engine being pretty much bombproof and being fastasfuck.

Actual end of the world bike would be either a points model C90, an enfield 350 bullet or a DKW RT125 derivative.

Does long distances at speed over post-apocalyptic terrain, chuckable enough with huge fuel tank and ample space for cargo and navigation equipment. Some come with shaft drive. Enough plastic to convert sportbike plastic fetishists and lots of plastic real estate for vintage stickers (from the bygone era), tribal markings, kill counts etc. Looks good dirty. Get one with a high front fender and put feathers all over it and call it the Bird of Paradise Lost.

Unwieldy looking yet strangely beautiful racebikes that are basically a huge engine, two wheels and some plastic bits tacked over the lot, made to go for hours at speed. Apparently their plastics are heavier gauge than other racebikes in order to better survive falls. Big tanks, ok storage capacity, but lack suspension travel. Some are shaft driven. Often have large screens so decent wind protection, replace screen with futuristic bulletproof perspex for decent wind and bullet protection. Lots of plastic real estate for vintage stickers (from the bygone era), tribal markings, kill counts etc.

Looks like it'd work over rough terrain. Decent storage space, small so easy to hide and camouflage. Two strokers are loud so not good for stealthing. A bit of surface area for stickers/tribal markings/good luck charms/etc.

When you really need to clear a way through post-apocalyptic road traffic fast. Hardened for combat, decent storage space and ultimate nuclear wasteland willy-waver. Fire rockets or adapt the barrel for grapeshot to pulverise foes in close combat. Olive drab colour scheme might be good camouflage in what little greenery remains after the nukes fell.

Mongrel of Pre-Unit BSA 650 push-rod twin motor, Triumph gearbox, and cycle-parts and Rickman Metisse frame.
Classic confection for pre-65 scrambles... it's low tech, you can hammer push-rods straight in a kerb-stone! Make clutch plates from cutting up an old leather jacket, or ignition points from a baked bean can, and a that kind of stuff.

Also relatively fuel and as importantly oil frugal. BUT, for an epoch-wilderness runner? High Compression Hepolites; bore out the main jet (single SU carb) and advance the fuck out the timing; Back in the day, they raced on Methanol... you run the thing on moon-shine.

You can make strong enough porchine in a sauce-pan still, BTW, from fermented potatoe peelings....*

It's not amazingly powerful, but, what power it has is all useable; geared for the road, it's a 100+mph motorcycle; for scrambles be short geared, but even so, 60-70mph over a bumpy field is more than quick enough!

And that's the most likely terrain you'd be on; good tarmac is likely to be in short supply, and if you are carrying high value goods between safe havens, any good roads there might be are gong to be the roads where ambushes are set.

That old Metisse, unlike a more contemprary 'MX' machine is robust, designed and built for hacking ;cross-country', not taking 'big air' of artificial jumps; it'll take more sustained pounding, and the crude suspension has no links or bushes to break or wear out; and can be more easily field-serviced.

The metisse chassis, also proved itself on the road and in road racing; it was a clubman machine, and very all-round competant; so almost as at home on good tarmac as on bad roads, gravel tracks, dirt trails as it is in its element being chucked around a ploughed field.

I cant think of anything likely to do the job of covering all bases and being serviceable, repairable, and point to point cross country quick in a fuel starved society.

If I could afford one... I wouldn't wait until the EoW to have one!

* Scavenging fuel would, like Mad-Max be a risky business, with stiff and deadly competition; and these days as many vehicles are as likely to have diesel in their tanks as petrol; why get into the battle if you can avoid it?

Methanol/moonshine; your mpg is going to half or more; but you'd still get 30 to the gallon or so from it, or about a gallon an hour, so your 200 mile hike, could be done in a day, 7hrs riding, even cross-country, and on about 7 gallons of fuel. full tank and a big gerry can probably get you there and back, with spare.

Couple of plastic wheelie bins as fermeting tanks; old copper heating tank and some copper brake pipe to make a still to take rough brew down to beverage strength; more brake pipe and a pressure cooker to get it up to fuel strength.

And you could fuel the still from the product, after getting your first batch burning wood; but remember you would probably need two gallons of alchohol to distill three, to have one for the bike.

But, you could ferment almost any vegetable matter; grass, stinging nettles; dock leaves, whatever; BUT less sugar/starch it contains, more you will need to brew. LOTS of wheelie bins!
