 Posted: 10:27 - 29 May 2014 Post subject: Replacement header pipes |
 |
|
Hi,
The header pipes have finally rotted through on my CBR and as a result are temporarily patched up whilst I can obtain a replacement. The corrosion seems to be a few holes strung along the bottom of one of the pipes and and a small hole where they join, leading me to assume it will probably be more worthwhile to just replace altogether rather than getting them welded.
I am unsure which way to go about it however. The only breakers I can find at reasonable prices seem to be in the USA meaning it would cost around £70 with shipping (e.g. these: https://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=121084335205&alt=web ), after taking a gamble on condition. If I were to go this way, I would sand them down and spray with BBQ paint to prevent any further corrosion.
A new set of header pipes can be had for £175 (with gaskets) from Sandybikespares, or £200 from Delkevic.
As a result, I am unsure which option would be best. I would prefer to spend as little as possible as I am pretty broke at the minute, but unsure as to whether going used may be a false economy.
What do you reckon is the best option?

DO NOT use Sandy bike spares, the company are actually borderline scammers. They use inferior materials and poor workmanship.
I put a set on my CBR600FX, they were baaad.
First off they have no balance pipes, the CBR600F4(i) series has balance pipes between 1+2 and 3+4, without them it kills the midrange
Secondly they don't actually last very long. I put new header pipes from sandy on in 2008. I did 1600 miles in 08 then zero in 2009. It was then stored away when I went overseas. In 2010 I did 360 miles to the BCF Barbecue before it was put back into storage.
I came back and took it to an MOT it failed on the exhaust blowing, the header collars on one port had snapped and it was blowing from there. Two other port collars also had massive all the way through cracks and were about to go too.
The bottom of the pipes where they join together there was also hairline crack, the place where you put the link pipe on had also split creating yet another crack.
So they in effect lasted less than 5 years and <2500 miles use, I admit that the bike was stored for a significant amount of time. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I've had good results from Delkevic. I'd buy theirs again. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

I fitted both types and think they both could come from the same factory in China !
Of the two Sandy bikes are the cheapest and best to deal with
Dave
I have a sandy front pipe one of my own bikes
