Relatively new biker, been riding over a month now and went for a nice long ride over to see the girlfriend today. As i was leaving her got back on my bike, fired her up (bike, not the girlfriend) and proceeded to knock it into first and pull away. Before i knew it i was arse over tit on the floor with a cbr 600 lying on my leg. Pretty painful and a tad embarrasing! I completely forgot the disc lock was on!
Just wondered if anyone has a useful way of reminding themselves about the disc lock being. Shouldn't really need reminding but just have to get in the habit of remembering!
Also when i managed to get it off me and back up again it wouldn't start for a few minutes before finally starting up, i assumed i'd flooded the bike when it went over? Can any major problems occur with the engine etc. By dropping the bike?

Cheers

As above:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=disc%20lock%20reminder

When I bought my disc lock the jovial sales guy in the shop went all serious and said he wouldn't actually sell me it unless I spent the extra £1 on one of the above.
Interesting sales pitch, but having since seen someone do what you've done, I'm glad the guy made me buy one.

Those reminder cables are good. Before I got mine (I'd already got the lock as I'd been using one as a bicycle lock) I used the piece of rubber sleeving method.

Get a piece of sleeving that is a snug fit on your ignition key and on your disk lock key. When you put the disk lock on, put the sleeving on your ignition key so it won't go in the ignition lock. When you come back to the bike, you can't start it without moving the sleeving to the disk lock key - which you only do when you've unlocked the disk lock. Park up, you can't lock your disk lock without moving the sleeving back to the ignition key.

It works well, as long as the sleeving is tight enough not to fall off in your pocket.

Carby? Don't worry about it not starting up, that's just the float bowls refilling and the carbs clearing out.

You're not going to forget an alarmed lock.

Mind you, you're not likely to forget again at all now. Wink

Just make sure your brake disc isn't bent to buggery from the impact!

I'd imagine it may put off the opportunist but it would only make for an inconvenience to an organised scummer.
The only damage they cause is highlighted in the op's original post.

I have a alarmed one. More a deterrent than full scale lockdown. but if there's 3 bikes and the scum are looking for a quick pinch then Id rather it not be mine Smile

I have an alarmed one too, 13 quid on ebay and it's pretty good. Sure it wouldn't stop a determined scumbag, but it makes an ear-bleedingly horrible noise when moved. Doubt I'll ever forget to take it off.

When I used a disc lock, I had a short piece of rubber hose which I kept on the key for the disc lock.

In order to unlock the lock, I'd have to take the bit of hose off and put it over the ignition key.

When I went back to the bike, there was a bit of hose over the ignition key, physically preventing me from starting the bike.

If you put it on the rear disc, you don't drop the bike if you try to ride away with it on. A rear calliper hanger is usually cheaper than a forkleg if you give it a proper clout. So put it on the rear disc, not the front one.

All things considered though, a padlock through the rear sprocket is better still (between the 7 and 11 o' clock positions). Harder to pick, unlikely to do any serious damage if you try to ride off with it in place and unexpected.
