I recently heard from somewhere that basically supermarket fuels are shit, watered down ECT.

I switched and now avoid them at all costs, TBH i have noticed i do get more miles.

Anyone else tried this?

I personally go for what ever is cheapest! I think only high performance or super fuel efficient engines for cars/bikes will be that sensitive to slightly different concentrations of the fuel.

When I got my Golf FSI I was told to use premium unleaded as the engine naturally runs very lean. I've not bothered and 100k miles later no problems to speak of.

Fill up at whatever is nearest when I need to fill up, never noticed any difference.

Supermarkets don't own the rigs pulling the oil or the refineries turning it in to petrol so I'd hazard a guess at it being no different to any other unleaded.

Mrs Phrealy (pending) lives near Kingsbury oil refinery. I've seen Jet, Esso and Morrisons lorries coming out of there.

Used to avoid it at all costs, bit of a shell fanboy.

Until last week I used the 20p off a litre thing at tesco.

Car noticeable felt less reactive/responsive, however, was just boring commuting anyway. No loss in miles to a tank.

Left me more open minded, I still don't think I'd ever use it if it was the same price as shell though. (Which it is without the offer..)

Also heard the same from an old colleague. I imagine if you're driving/riding around in something old and carby, or an impreza turbo, then it makes a difference.

Was wondering this as I filled my Vara up at Asda last night

Propaganda perpetuated by the likes of Shell, Esso and BP, I'm afraid.

There are often different detergents in 'branded' fuel but the base petroleum is the same.

The fuel is alright, it's the antiquated storage tanks that let down a lot of fuels and, with so many franchises, you're as likely to suffer from water and shit in fuel from a Shell V-Power pump as from a Tesco 95RON pump.

I run my bike on Tesco bog standard fuel, it's a low revving lazy engine so doesn't need any sort of ping/detonation protection that high octane affords. I've done ~32k in the last 17 months with no problem.
I also run my diesel car on supermarket diesel. I used to run my old car on used [filtered] chip fat, so supermarket fuel is a luxury.

OTOH, my petrol turbo-charged car always runs on higher octane fuel because it's running a much bigger turbo/more boost than standard - so it's beneficial in that application.

Supermarket Fuels

I waded through many a forum debate on this some time ago. I read in summary, that it all comes from the same place initially. Sometimes the Supermarket will not add as much (or as good a quality, or any) additive/detergent whatever, to the fuel as perhaps Texaco or Shell might. 50% of people swear it makes no difference, and 50% claim better response and better MPG in the bikes/cars.

All I can say is, I use Tesco half the time and Texaco the other half, and have never noticed any difference, or any impurities either way.

I had a bike mechanic tell me that supermarket fuel can cause greater deterioration of engine and engine parts. I don't go there any more.

Depends on whether I fancy using the nifty pay at the pump thing at ASDA, have a double Nectar point voucher for Sainsburys or find myself at a Shell. I don't care!

Anyone else using an app to track petrol cost and use? I started in January for the car and I am surprised at how much my mpg varies from month to month. I have also spent £635 on fuel in that time, fookin hell!

Meh I'm getting around to it seriously, just a few simple mistakes. Completely my fault and can't take my test until I wait 2 weeks (due to work start times) Rolling Eyes.

Doing it again next week, locked back brake up, failed by 2mph and then did my u-turn too slowly for some unknown reason.

I've forgotten the question

ASDA, moggysons, safeburies and an esso and BP garage known to clone cards (pay in cash)

No difference on ZZR or 1.2 diesel Ibiza, the vara liked V power when they'd run out of regular.

I avoid texaco cos it's stupidly expensive

In your own words:

TheSmiler wrote:
I'm getting tests sorted. It's my main aim now

This has been the case for the past 2 years ive been on here...

I certainly remember you saying you were going to get your licence soon, back in 2012 when I was just starting out. I did about 6 months on a 125, passed my Mod 1 and Mod 2, and cleared my restriction in the time you've done nothing... and I took my time and got my licence the long way... Confused

Yes I tried in 2012 things went wrong limited cash (too many bills), 2013 I booked some training and was going to re-do my CBT at the same time when my bike got stolen in the July. Before that I had to repay bills and debts plus I only got work in the April.

Then I got offered the chance so far of my lifetime by an honorable member on here. Decided to take it and I'm working towards my license; things happen plans change.

Doesn't really matter to me how long it takes I'm in no certain rush.
