Howdy.
I've had my street triple r for 2 years now- bought from new. It's beautiful. It's light, nimble and pokey- performance wise it suits me and my build perfectly. I'm a bit if fair weather rider, so don't rack up the miles.
I never have been a great fan on the naked bike look though. It's time for a change- and as I've just had a sprog I ideally need something that's going to cost me a little less each month.
So...
...what should I consider? Something as fun and nimble as the str but perhaps with a sportier faired look?

I do love the idea of a Daytona.
Is the standard cbr really a close match?

I would go for the Daytona as it looks and sounds the nuts.

The cbr will be faster in a strait line probably but in terms of power the triple will be more fun.

Why don't you just go get some test rides on the various 600-class plastic fantastics and see if one of them grabs you? Possible you'll miss the triple's power delivery, so I'd look at GSXR750 as well.

The CBR has a similar power delivery but less meaty. Linear to the point of tedium in fact. It's more road biased, with a lower rear end and doesn't feel as slim and pointy. More compact riding position, if that's your thing.

I must declare an interest as I have a Daytona...

But in your position I'd switch to a Daytona. All the delights of the triple engine, with the sportier look and fairings that you're after, and a more sporty riding position.

I think you would be disappointed if you went for a different 600. I agree with Bendy, if you don't want a Daytona then look at the GSXR750.

Daytona sounds like the one to go for. Anything I should be aware of when shopping for used? Do they get hammered?

There aren't really any massive alarm bells, they're pretty reliable and I'm not aware of any big faults to look for.

As with any bike, look for something that hasn't been messed about with too much, any tell-tale signs of having been dropped. A decent service history.

Seriously, ride some other stuff before just buying the bike you already have but with a fairing.

NB. A Daytona is only going to cost you less per month (in your original requirement) if you're making payments on your Street. Otherwise, running costs will be identical.

I am making payments on the str- best part of £200 p/m. Any saving on that would be a bonus. Fair point re riding some different bikes. Suzuki 750 and cbr are two suggestions- anything else I should book in?

All the other Universal Japanese 600s. They're all samey yet something'll grab you more about one than the others.

You should try some twins as well. And really, some different capacities too. Shop around - 'fun' is a very personal choice and you might find something you like.

Not what you'd want to hear/do, but in that position I'd get rid of your STR and settle the finance, and then go out and find a tidy 90's 600cc sportsbike if that's what you want.

I can't help but think that you'd be much better off without making monthly payments on a new/nearly new bike, and that if you found a mint bike that had been looked after like say an old ZX6R F3, or SRAD600, you have just as much fun on a much smaller budget.

Running costs in terms of fuel/tyres/servicing are not likely to be much different though IMO.

I would also recommend this. I tried all the 06-08 ish jap ones before going Trumpet. Summary as follows:

Gixxer: cheap, poor finish, doesn't do anything the others don't
R6: rode my mate's 08 extensively, a riot above 10k, irritating for the 85% of the time when you're not. Seat is like a plank, lots of bolts to undo to work on.
6R: superb. On a par with the Daytona, physically bigger. Similar components. Engine and looks swung it in the end.
CBR: civilised, boring engine, very comfortable. Easy to ride, best fit and finish, not as engaging or grin/horn inducing. If you'll never do a trackday and are small, go Honda.

Things I'm thinking about for my next bike, some suggestions to also bear in mind: 848, GSXR750.

One bike I did want to try before I bought the Street Triple was the V twin Tuono, but the only dealer in the area that had one wouldn't let me test ride it before buying Rolling Eyes

I did pop in and show him my brand new STR a couple of weeks later and he wasn't very chatty Laughing

I know the situation well.
I was only too pleased to show off my Triple to a couple of dealers who didn't want to let me test ride. Middle Finger
