I've finally sorted out all the bits my 1980 Cb125T was missing (it only took getting a complete other bike to bastardise for spares Rolling Eyes ) So it's now running........just.

It starts fine and starts to idle around 3000RPM but then slowly kills itself unless you hold the throttle open slightly. Also if you try and open the throttle past about 1/4 it loses power and dies (it feels the same as when you open the throttle and the bike loses power because it needs to be switched to reserve). I've tried to get to get it to pull away behind the garage but as soon as you try and load the engine it dies

So where do i start? I set the pilot screw as per the manual and tried adjusting the idle.

I get the feeling i may need to pull the carbs off and clean out the jets? I got a bit impatient during the rebuild and decided that seeing as the float bowls were clean the rest would be fine Rolling Eyes

So any advice on cleaning carbs and general set up would be much appreciated Thumbs Up

Well, I think you probably know what's wrong... and what to do about it. You got to take the carbs off and clean the jsts properly.
Be fucking careful taking them off.. remove air-boxes first DONT try yanking them out from between the rubbers... symptoms could already suggest that has been done too often and you have air-leaks in the manifolds which are pure unobtanium.
Once lean and re-fitted making sure you have nice new gaskets where required and no leaks... make sure choke links are syncronised and stay open and closed when told to do so; then report back. IF there's anything to report apart from 'works now'.

Yeah I thought that'd be the case, I was just checking in hope that i might have missed something easy and obvious.

One of the airbox rubbers was already half dead when i got it and after spending weeks looking for the non existent replacements it's had to be bodged and made do with, but I think it has a reasonably good seal...

How am i best going about cleaning the carbs out? Is there a good guide anywhere that anyone can recommend?

Haynes Manual No. 571, Honda CB, CD & CM125 Twins, is pretty comprehensive on the topic.

ohh and when it comes to cleaning out the carbs ive just had to strip mine in order to set the float bowl heights which were completely out meaning mine was idling at 5000rpm Shocked
but all good now Very Happy so if you cant find a haynes manual i have one i can photograph for you to save you the cash or you can do as i did and leave the carbs in the parts washer for a night and like i say i have airbox rubbers in perfect condition and no use for them as i swapped the airbox on 1 of mine for a set of K&N'S so let me know if your still in need of the rubbers and anything else and i can work something out.
All the best Jim Goose

It opens up 'possibilities' hmmmmnz, but, unfortunately the Jinlun copy motors are based on the last variant of the CB engine, the TD-J, and there are a few notable differences; crank and cam-chain is one; the T's and TD's have a duplex roller cam-chain, the TD-J/Jinlun has a Hi-Vo; hence different crank as the crank-sprocket is cast integral with the middle pin.
Carb-wise, TD-J/Jinlun has banked CV carbs; where the T's & TD-C&E have PD sliders; hence different mounting rubbers.

Possible to use the entire TD-J set-up from the head through to the air-box; Chinky carbs are actually cheapest bit of that set-up; aprox £120 off e-bay from China; cheaper than a pair of TD-J slide-diaphragm's from Dave Silvers; but the mount rubbers are I think £30 each! And I think you may need the head flanges and you definitely need the carb-airbox rubbers; so unless you can pillage from a TD-J, its not the most economical 'fix'.

Its the airbox to carb linking rubbers that I'm looking for, they're pretty much unobtainable so if you have any I'd definitely be interested in sorting something out Smile
