So, a couple of months back I received a NIP for speeding in Wales, 91 in a 60. Still not heard anything after filling the damn thing out....or have I? I did get an email purporting to be from "the authorities" (can't even remember it exactly - well, not at all, just the fact I got it), and containing a zip file that my computer told me it wouldn't download or open cos it contained a virus. So I deleted it.

As far as I know, and what others tell me, is you always receive a summons by post. Do I even need to be mildly concerned that I'm effectively ignoring that email? Surely not, as I didn't even give an email address on the form, but have taxed my bike online before so perhaps they could have got it?

I've had a NIP before that I didn't know about cos I moved before receiving it. Went into a cop shop some months later for something or other to do with an RTA and was informed that there was a warrant out for my arrest, and I might not be going home that evening Laughing Wonder if I'm back in that situation again Rolling Eyes

They won't have sent you anything via email at this stage (or at any stage). The email you got has nothing to do with it.

They have 14 days to send you a NIP, but after that's done, they've got several months before they have to do anything else. A delay before hearing anything isn't terribly unusual from what I've read.

The email would have been a virus, I highly doubt it would have been an official email. Did you ever provide your email address?

A court summons would always come in the post. They have six months to "lay an information" before the court (lodge all the paperwork with the court), so you'll have to sweat a bit longer yet.

Certainly didn't provide an email address on the returned NIP - doesn't ask for one. But someone asked me if I'd ever taxed my bike online, where you do give email, which I have, so just wondered.

Thanks guys - all tallies with what I thought, always summons by post and can take a while, but you know how these things can niggle, and I'm not great with keeping up with changes in the system, so just wondered if they'd started doing things that way...

That email is going the rounds, along with TNT, Amazon, Fedex and a bunch of others.

None of these people will ever send a zip file. It is a virus.

EDIT: Honestly there were no replies to this, I hit send and there are 10! Smile

91 in a 60 is instaban territory, especially when dealing with hillbilly redneck Magistrates. You'll want to get a specialist motoring solicitor prepped and ready to go when the summons hits the mat.

indeed, I was always a bit vague on the actualities of what might constitute an instant ban in different limits but this is kinda helpful (here)
