I'm about to buy a road bike. I've never had a litre bike so I'd like to try that, but at the same time my last 600cc was all I needed.

Now I've got a sum of money which allows me to buy the following:

2004 Honda CBR 1000 RR - 170bhp and 176kg dry. It looks great imho and it's probably all I would ever want from a bike. The only concern is the age as that would be another 10 year old bike for me Laughing If not that I would go for it straight away. Optionally I can probably go for 2006+ model, but that would stretch me a little.

https://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e85/motorcyclesJZ/Random/cbr1000rr_zps09e2be39.jpg

Now thinking about a decent fairly new bike it brings this option...

2008 Honda CBR 600 RR - 115bhp and only 156kg dry! (apparently the lightest in its class). It's probably faster and more fun to ride than my old ZX-6R J2, but it's not a litre bike Razz If i buy this I'll be still thinking how it is to own a litre bike.

https://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e85/motorcyclesJZ/Random/cbr600rr_zpsd8b8cbed.jpg

Another 1000cc option is 2004 Yamaha YZF-R1 but I don't like the look of them that much. But good bikes I've heard. Surprisingly cheaper than CBR1000RR.

Now what I need from a bike:
- sport type
- good looking
- fast
- light
- capable of going long distances if needed to
- penis extension
- good for posers
- something that I will never get bored to look at
- weekend toy
- matching my good looks

Unimportant bits:
- insurance premium (about the same)
- fuel consumption

EDIT:
Talking about my good looks.. I look a bit like this guy..

Why not split the difference between the 600 and the 1000 and look at a GSXR 750?

I don't know. I used to desire GSXR750 K4, but now I cannot stand the look of the GSXR.. they all look the same 600, 750, 1000 and they are so common they seem to be everywhere Neutral
I'm also concerned about Suzuki build quality and longevity. Suzukis seem to get tatty very quickly.

Ignore the Litre bike Hype its not as exciting as you might think...Unless you like Just lots of Torque and Ridiculous amounts of power on tap.

I've had my K1 Thou for a month now and Yes its ridiculously fast (As expected) but On the road its just not as fun as Id like. Everything is just effortless I prefer to be hooning about going up and down the gears.

It all boils down to you're own preference on how you enjoy riding a bike I guess.

Have you ridden any of the bikes you're trying to choose between?

Nope, not yet.
Sat on CBR1000RR once. I like the size. I've never ridden one though.

As for CBR600RR I'm going to have a closer look at one of them soon. I've tried a previous 2004 CBR600RR and I liked it very much.

I've never tried R1.

My tupence worth.

The CBR 1000 is the best looking of your bunch, but..... Honda only ran it for a year or two, because it was outclassed by both the Suzuki and the Yam R1 of that models years. Parts are not very plentiful.
The GSX-R was the tool of choice, the R1 always nipping at its heels.
As for pose value, well, they are 'old hat' now, so no real posing value, you need a Panigale or an MV for that.
A six hundred, especially the later models, are all getting very frantic in the quest for more BHP, losing out on grunt and ride-ability.
But, any of the 1000's have far too much power, (lovely) and deliver it easily, no revving the tits off any of them, unless you like hedge rows.
On balance, I'd go for Honda build quality every time.

My Fave 1000cc sportsbike from 2004 would be the ZX10R, simply because it will be a future classic, and will be remembered as a post millennium hooligan bike, that wasn't easy to ride fast but had a reputation!

My only reservation with the 2004> R1 is that firstly I don't like them as much as the 2002 R1, and secondly the colour's offered were a bit Meh and not that exiting! I also wonder if the new Crossplane R1 is a night and day better bike to ride than the pre-crossplane R1, and if that will affect future values?

Blade seems a nice and logical choice, and if insurance and fuel costs are only a bit more than running the 600CBR, and you want 1000cc, then I'd probably go for it! I think with an HRC or Rothmans paint job they'd be pretty attention seeking too!

I've not been on many IL4 thous but I've had a go on a few twins so I'm not speaking from too much experience here, however my mates RR8 Blade was the easiest bike to ride fast I have ever been on. Effortless, easy to ride, engine is like a turbine. The riding position is roomy and comfy too. Utter pig to work on but other than that, I loved it. Would have had one myself had a cheese eating surrender monkey not knocked me off the Triumph.

Hi mJZ,

Will there be a trackday or two along the way? Mr. Green

Blade looks good, but I'd choose the CBR600RR so you can give it a thrashing Thumbs Up

Don't be a girl, it's a Honda.

My F-sport is on a Y plate and it cleans up like new. As long as you spoil them they will continue to do so for a long time yet.

I'm not keen on taking my new baby for a track day Razz I was more thinking about getting another cheap bike for that purpose (some cheap srad).. I think I learn on my mistakes Wink

SRADs will serve the purpose just as well.. I'll rather have a slower bike for the track to learn more how to ride efficiently. Easy to be fast on a fast bike. Also riding a bike that I don't care to drop helps the speed as well Wink

I should put it this way - age doesn't concern me as much as the mileage and overall condition (that's affected by age).. I will be trying to find something really nice, privately with low mileage. I won't buy this one with more than 15k miles (obviously I will judge mileage and condition together). But I want it below 15k, ideally below 10k.. I'm willing to pay a bit extra for good condition.

Yesterday I realized that this bike is in my range...

https://moto-images.caradisiac.com/VGN/jpg/4/1/7/2/6/400x281_Daytona675SE_overview_534x375.jpg

I still have quite a soft spot for this particular version of Daytona 675.

Those get me especially moist. Totally different to a Blade though. Much slimmer and pointier feeling.

It felt small. I normally don't mind that but when I try to imagine a trip to Wales, Scotland, Spain etc. it gives me quite bad thoughts Razz

But that version of Daytona 675 was the best looking one ever Thumbs Up Definitely on my 10 most desired bikes ever list.

I'm in my 30s and have never owned a litre bike. I just need to try it and then "downgrade" if I don't like it.

To be honest I thought when I had £4.5k it would be easy to find a bike. No, it doesn't work that way.

A part of me is telling me to buy some decent 600cc for up to £2.5k and keep the rest of the money, the other part of me knows this is possibly the once in a life time opportunity to buy something better than what I usually get. Later, in next few years I'll have to remortgage, kids are growing up so they will cost me fortune.. Future certainly is not bright Laughing

I've done well over 200 miles in a day with no aches and pains. It's an acquired test and definitely needs a test ride, you sit on rather than in it. If it works for you though, it works very well indeed.

I rode the 2007 600RR once. I thought if I bought one I'd lose my license on it. Short, light, fast and stupidly easy to wheelie and stoppie. Mental crazy bike. By extension if I had a 2004 Fireblade I'd probably get myself into trouble very quickly.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
