PostPosted: 19:47 - 04 Jun 2014    Post subject: Temporary Insurance to MOT and Sell Reply with quote

Hi, I'm looking to sell my Kawasaki er5 and think it would be worth MOTing to get a better sale. I will need insurance to take it to the centre and am looking at the cheapest options. I could see if they collect and drop off but may cost.

Do you know any daily/payg insurance providers?

Thanks.

Having the bike picked up and delivered may be cheaper and a lot less headache than finding an insurer that will insure you for just one day and then paying for a day's insurance.

Don't you know anyone with a van? Have you tried asking here and offering diesel money + beer? Or, if you have a license rent a van for a day and take it yourself.

Probably cheaper to have the shop collect it.

Thanks for that, what could I expect to pay for pickup? I also need insurance to tax it but maybe its not worth taxing.

Have been here before.
There are now no temp/day insurance for motorcycles.
The continuous insurance rules killed them off apparently.

Best you can go for is the company who does monthly policies.
I'm sure someone will be along to remind me of the name. (or Google).

Find the insurer with the lowest "cost of setting up the policy" charge, insure, cancel within the statutory 14 day cooling off period.

The FSO has upheld up to (I believe) £50 as being reasonable, which it clearly isn't, so shop around. Sadly, actual contracts are much harder to compare than headline prices.

Plus the fact if you insure for the day.

You will also need to tax for the day.

Then cancel the tax and SORN when you cancel the insurance.

T'other way around.

Insurance Arrow MOT Arrow VED in that order.

It does look like asking the garage to pick up and deliver will be the easier option though.

interesting.

I wonder if the DVLA rules have allowances in the continuous insurance scheme for bikes with no MOT?

Why would they?

Every vehicle needs to be insured unless it's SORNed. MOT has nothing to do with either of those. You can be insured without an MOT[*], or you can SORN an insured bike with or without an MOT.

MOTs don't make Capita Ltd trading as DVLA Collections any money directly, so they don't give a stuff about them except as expressly required (i.e. needing to have one to pay for VED).

[*] I've seen a few contracts of insurance that say that the vehicle must have a current MOT. That's a ridiculous clause which I would and do feel free to ignore if it's only being used to take it to an MOT.

Under CIS though you can't have a vehicle insured without tax.

So insuring to get an MOT to get the tax is in breach of CIS until you get the VED. Unles there is a provision that allows for it?

So while you can have insurance without MOT, CIS mandates that you can't have a vehicle insured without VED.

Or have I got something wrong there?

the issue with that is, what if you have a sorn bike, that is going for MOT

you need insurance incase you run over a kitten, but it cant be "taxed" as it needs a MOT....

Pretty sure you have.

It's an offence to be the keeper of an uninsured vehicle.

It's a defence to SORN an uninsured vehicle (although that's in Regulations, subject to the whim of the Secretary of State for Transport, sadly).

You have to have insurance (and an MOT) in order to buy VED, at the point where it's paid.

I'm not aware of any other conditions.

I managed to arrange a pickup and deliver for £20 on a Saturday morning. MOT £25 and a service for £120. Not going to bother taxing, so a quick wash down and it will be ready to go.

Put an ad on Shiply maybe, a local man with van might help you out for next to nothing. I got a KTM Delivered 300 miles for ~£70 on there.

perhaps CIS mean that your insurance in invalid in their eyes if the bikes VED has expired or that in the event of a claim being made they will not pay out if the vehicle did not have current VED.

If I was to cancel the insurance on my enfield after 7 days, it would have cost me about £33 (£30 + £155 x 7/365)

I passed my A licence at about 10am in the morning, drove my car home, insured the bike online, booked an MOT, then drove it to the tester after lunch, then drove it down the street to the nearest post office, where I taxed it using the still wet from the printer MOT certificate and my freshly printed insurance certificate.

Does the DVLA send out MOT reminders a month before the current MOT is due to expire? just curious.
