There is strong evidence (which for reasons of common sense I won't describe on a public forum) that someone has tried to steal my bike Mad

This probably means that it is time to get an Almax set up. Is Almax really the best brand? or are there others? I did have a look a an Oxford nemesis at my local shop, but it was priced a bit steep.

Any ideas would be appreciated Smile

There is Pragmasis chains which are comparable to Almax ones.

But you state: "but it was priced a bit steep."

Have you seen the price of the Almax chains?

In my experience, you get what you pay for.

Well it was priced about the same about Almax, but aren't people generally iffy about Oxford?

Almax or Pragmasis, have a look on ebay and google to see if you can find any second hand ones on here or other forums.

For reasons of common sense, you should post everything on this public forum. Mr. Green

Almax or Pragmasis are approximately eleventy billion times better than whatever overpriced Oxford chain you've seen.

Thought this would be the case…Is a tall wooden post sufficient to lock against? Or had I better get one of their ground anchors as well?

Sufficient is relative. I'd expect a ground anchor to be more secure but that doesn't mean it's going to make your bike unstealable.

I'd say go for the ground anchor if you can. Thumbs Up A good chain and ground anchor is an investment that you'll be able to use with your future bikes and the cost of the ground anchor is probably less than what you'd end up paying in increased insurance prices if your bike was nicked.

As an idea, I use a gorilla lock. There are some negatives as well as positives about this (400 quid) but the reason I use it is because as soon as I enter my driveway, my bike is locked. I don't fiddle with anything or am tempted to leave it out - it is just locked.

The second reason is that the tools required to bust it open are not 'typical.' If you had the right tools, I think it would be possible to get through but it stood up to the local scrote test and standard tools won't do it.

For me, the deciding factor was that it locked my bike every time I arrived and it is just like my car. I arrive, it is locked and I don't even have to think about it.

That's a glorified ground anchor and locking just a wheel to a ground anchor isn't a good idea.

Indeed, they'll have your front axle off in about 60 seconds.

It doesn't even look like it's anchored. I see no sign of bolts into the ground.

Which would be pointless as it'll be into blocks, not a good 4 inches of concrete.

I have a Series 4 Almax. Weighs a fuckton. I feel it's sufficient. And it's something you'll have for the length of your biking life (as long as it doesn't get nicked with the bike) so for the £200 for it, to then not have to pay again ever; makes it not seem so bad.

I like the look of that gorilla lock Smile but don't think a nice bike would last long parked in front of a house with just that on. They would be great around town though, pull up in a bike bay slot £1 in and away you go, like a swimming baths locker, save taking a chain to town/work

Opinions differ, but I would (and did) get the long link. It's lighter and it's more flexible in that you can shorten it and your lock only has to fit over one link rather than two.

I'll probably be ordering an Almax and lock tomorrow then…Just one thing…if its so huge, how will I get to through the frame on my bike? I can only just find a bit big enough to get my Oxford cheese chain through Shocked

Check out the Pinch Pin that Pragmasis do. Basically a steel bar you poke through the frame/rear axle and then lock your chain to the ends of it.

Otherwise, can you go between engine/downpipes? Personally I tend to just go through back wheel. Certainly not perfect, but the hassle of removing a back wheel is probably not worth bother of a £1.5k bike. Especially when it's usually parked up next to much higher value bikes...
