Fully faired, cramped riding position with, probably old brittle hard to find plastics and panels if should another spill occur, and suspension that's useless as std for anyone over 8st. Every day commuter? No thank you not for me!

If the OP wants a nice punchy single, then choices are limited somewhat, but things like the Honda FMX650 are pretty cheap and would do a decent job. Be a shame to lose the looks and funkiness of the MT, but hey.

KTM's are a bit rare, and I'd expect it would be hard to find a nice Duke or 690SM etc at the price bracket involved.

I'd look at other stuff potentially like the Honda Hornet, Yam FZ6 or an ER6, BMW G650X etc.

I once owned an FMX650 for 2 years and would suggest not to go for one. Old engine, heavy and slow. I had fun on it as it was my first big bike, but wouldn't own another. Much better bikes out there.

OP asked for a small light bike. I suggested a 400. Not out of the realms of possibility, Stevo.

BMW X Moto. That one was rescued from the Cornish fish-folk even.

Also keep an eye out for X Country, and X... whatever the other one was called. Lighter and more powerful than the G650GS, my working assumption is that they only didn't sell because they didn't have that magic "GS" badge.

Haven't read through the other thread fully, but as it's only a Cat D, I'm guessing it's mainly cosmetic, apart from the forks?

First thing I would do is put your bike back on the road, it won't cost anything like £2900 to do it (probably less than a grand) and you get a running concern that you can P/X, or the bike you like back again, whichever you decide.

Either way, you're up on the deal.

Yeah - don't assume you can't get the bike sorted. Might not be as dear as you think.

Old bikes now, but great build quality. Concur about fairings. However seem to remember that OP is built on the small side, in which case a CBR400 will not feel at all cramped; it was comfortable for me at 5'8". For the same reason the rear suspension may be okay, if a little tired.

But still, a 20-year old bike for commuting... Thinking
