Honda MTX Trip

Hi guys,
Coming up to 125 time, and I want your guys knowledge and opinion!

I would like to put discs on my MTX, and would like to know what I require. I know I can do it by getting new forks and swinging arm, but any other ways?

Also, what colour and graphics (if any) should I have! Need some ideas.

Let me know lads, I will keep this up to date with photos.

You'll have to change the whole front end. Forks, wheel, brake caliper, brake line brake lever, master cylinder. Do-able, but not cheap. But a well set up drum brake should be reasonable. Maybe not.

Graphics...can't help you.

If you do do it, keep the original stuff, getting rare now, may be worth something, try not to butcher anything if you can.

The mtx only had drum on the back the front can be changed for a later mtx

Service the drums and you'll find they're as good as any discs, tbh.

As for colour and graphics, you'll want to keep it an original colour scheme if possible. That way, when you step up to a big bike licence you'll have an asset worth selling, and a queue of misty-eyed, middle aged blokes reminiscing about their teens who'll want to pay far too much for it. If you restyle it to something that you really like the only people coming to buy it will be those with identical tastes to your own.

TL;DR Keep it original and reap the rewards when it's time to sell.

Im pretty sure some of the KMX stuff fits, so if you could get the yokes to fit , get a whole kmx front end, but you will need to trim the kmx swingarm down each side to fit in the MTX frame, its defeinetly do able.

As others said, make sure you keep the original bits, these bikes go for good money in good condition!

I'd save the hassle and just get an 86> MTX front end. You can re-build the forks and braking system and then fit the lot on yours. It's not worth trying to make KMX stuff fit unless your sitting surrounded in KMX parts, have loads of time, and access to machine tools etc.

The rear MTX drum, is a good brake when serviced and with new shoes correctly adjusted etc. You don't need a disc on the rear and it won't give you a better brake afterwards either.

If your wanting a rear disc for looks, again I would not bother. It's going to be hard to make an MTX look like a modern dirtbike, and they look great as they are. The std swingarm with the snail cam chain adjustment is in a way better than the KMX's set up.

Nice classic bike, just keep it clean, maybe replace/repair any plastics/paint, and enjoy the way it looks.

I thought these may fit as they are from a early CR125.

They won't fit, that year CR 125 has USD forks, the later MTX's still have conventional. 50cc.net sells fork guards for normal forks, and sell a lot of parts for larger smokers, not just mopeds. But they are based in Sweden, so I would only suggest buying them if you had a bulk order as well.

Edit; you could fit them, but you'd need to cable tie them on or something, would very bodgy.

I'm actually trying to fit some MTX125 RWD Forks onto my moped ATM, I managed to pick up the whole front end including yokes for £45, Just need to have a test fit then see if it's worth it or whether I should sell them on. My quick measurements look like it should work.

EDIT 2: DO you want something like this? These are for right way up forks, a KDX200, but maybe Kawi green would clash with a Honda.

Also what tooth rear/front sprocket do you guys recommend? I'll be taking her long distances on motorways and want it to cruise at 70/80 nicely. Any chance of that?

It's hardly an ideal bike for long distance motorway use, but I think the full power 20bhp version of the MTX managed about 75mph in top on std gearing, (about 10mph more than the 12bhp uk spec). If it's anything like the KMX125 it's probably touching the red-line by then, but a +1t on the front sprocket is probably as high as you could go in terms of the bike still being useable and without ruining the acceleration too much?

I'd say 65-70mph is a more realistic cruising speed, and with the poor aerodynamics of a trail bike your likely to be pretty much at full throttle at 70mph+ all the time except down hill or with a tailwind.
