Looking at getting a pair of these boots. Going to buy second hand for now as funds are tight.

I intend to use them for my daily commute so I'm looking for durability, waterproofness and comfort. Will also be using them for the rare occasions when I go out on the weekends.

Has anyone got/had these? Are they good for purpose described above? Do they tick all (or any) of my requirements?

Feedback appreciated.

Thanks

They're good boots, although the sole is prone to wearing if you walk more than five yards in them.

Excellent boots. Crashed several times in mine, comfy and look good. What more do you want?

I've been wearing some SMX-4's everyday, since I picked them up second hand last Autumn. Very good boots, very comfy, never leaked and plenty warm enough through winter. Had a low speed off in them (filtering and idiot lane swapped, took me out). Squashed my ankle under bike, but the SMX's have a bit of side armour covering your sticky out bit of ankle bone, so I walked away with just a small bruise. Was gone day or two later.

Complaints: only couple of minor things: the rubber protection on top of toes for gear change lever is too far back. I have started to wear the leather further forward nearer my toes now. Secondly, they're a tiny bit too bulky to hide under jeans, especially the hard plastic 'Alpinestars' name badge sticking out the back of them.

Biggest gripe however is amount of grip the soles give, in the wet I have put my feet down and just slid about. I know I got them second hand, but they didn't look excessively worn out, plenty of visible grip on soles, however it just isn't very effective in practice. Not so bad now I'm aware of it, but on a few occasions it did nearly cause me to drop the bike when pulling up at junctions etc.

Either way, pretty chuffed with them, got them second hand for half the money my previous Hein Gericke boots cost and are looking set to outlive them by a good margin.

I've only ever heard good reviews about them.

They do a SMX5-WP and SMX5 so keep an eye out for the waterproof version.

I went for the SMX-PLUS goretex in the end as goretex ftw!

Great stuff, thanks all for your replies. Thumbs Up

There's quite a few floating around on ebay so my first thought was that they can't be that good if everyone's getting rid of them!

I'll start bidding tonight. Very Happy

I have both SMX5 and SMX5+ iirc (one with clips one without)

Have to say the clip less SMX5 are really comfy and easy to get on, the SMX5+ (with clips) are a pain to get on but comfy enough once one.

Can't really comment beyond comfort as neither are particularly worn (+'s survived as low side with minimal issues)

After 2 years and 20,000 miles ish, the zip on one of the boots has gone, still secure enough with the Velcro, and the sole is on it's way out anyway, they still work so intent on using them till they actually fall apart. There my everyday go to boot and when they die I won't hesitate to buy another pair.

I also have the smx plus as my weekend fun boot, again, brilliant.

I've got a pair of SMX5-WP's and would definitely recommend them. Had them about 2 1/2 years now and they're still completely waterproof. Thumbs Up

I have a second hand pair of SMX4, and they are still brilliant. I have had them for 18 months, the guy before me had em a while. They are scuffed on the toes (were when I got them). A little on the snug size, but comfortable, and easy to walk in. Keep the water out, keep my feet warm so all in all, does the job.

When they do die, I am looking to get a newer pair, and the SMX5 looks lovely.

I recently bought a pair of smx4 as the father in law bought 5's and when we were looking I tried on both they were very comfy. I've only ever felt that kind of comfort in my Ariat horse riding boots(£275) but knew instantly they were the ones for me!

When I returned the 4's were 30 quid cheaper so that sealed it. They are used only for weekend pleasure riding but have improved my comfort level and thus enjoyment level!

Had a pair of SMX's for a good 4-5 years now. A zip broke on one of mine (easily replaced at local shoesmiths) but thats it. Still waterproof even in the worst rain. Mine still have plenty of meat left in the soles (although I dont tend to walk around in them that much). Only issue as mentioned is theyre appaling lack of grip when the ground is wet/slippery.

Sidi vertigo's are better. The sole is not fragile.

I have the SMX-5 WP (waterproof) - they've been awesome for the last couple of years / 40k miles. I've started to wear through the left hand sole though, but I think this is down to me sometimes sliding my foot along when in heavy traffic.
I'll most likely buy another pair of these when they do finally wear out.

Got a pair of smx6 gore-tex boots, after 1500 miles of commuting in all weathers since April, they've been faultless. Comfy as slippers, dry as a bone and in this warm weather my feet have never got hot or sweaty.

I tried on the sidi b2 and dainese trq tour gore-tex before these and neither were anywhere near as comfy as the smx6. Tried some smx5 wp boots too and they fitted me just as well as the smx6's.
