I noticed this in the Metro this morning and found an article on the telegraph.

the Ariel Atom has become the world’s fastest panda car!

Avon and Somerset police force has taken delivery of one of the 155mph cars which has been painted in the force livery and fitted with special aerodynamic blue lights.

Avon and Somerset Police borrowed the Atom from local manufacturer Ariel for the summer while it promotes a new road safety campaign aimed at slowing down speeding motorcyclists. (we don't speed do we??)

oh, and sorry if this has been discussed already!

but then that's probably just me Embarassed

lol

either way, it's a load of bollocks that will serve to further alienate the trafpol from the public. well done guys Rolling Eyes

A birdie has just told me that if you check 470M on the askmid site (not that you would check as it's not your vehicle) it comes up as no record found. So that's uninsured. Being driven on a public road.

Thinking remind me, what exemptions do the police have again ? Confused Maybe they're driving under a trade insurance policy? Confused

Just been told police vehicles are considered "Crown" vehicles/property and so exempt from insurance and road tax.

Number plate still looks dodgy to me though Rolling Eyes

They aren't exempt, they 'self-insure'.

Big companies and also government departments don't buy insurance as they generally 1) have deep enough pockets to cover eventuality and it generally works out cheaper to not get insured and pay any liabilities yourself and 2) in a lot of cases insurance companies won't touch them.

Pretty sure the police will have cars with similar and higher top speeds as daily-drivers.

Looks like a public road and looks like they don't have a front number plate. Bit naughty if they're trying to use it to promote people following the rules and so on?

Seems more like a publicity stunt for Ariel than anything - they're supposed to be announcing a motorcycle of their own soon.

Looked at the pictures of the Atom and was sad, it`s the first time I`ve seen one of them and thought how nice it would be if it burst into flames?

Hardly surprising since it isn't registered with the DVLA. So it's completely illegal to use it on a public road.
