so, with the weather being nice yesterday decided to go on an extended trip home along motorways an stuff (never been on one before on a bike),

my bike has no fairings/ screen or nowt

at 70 ish Wink i was struggling to hold on, basically getting battered by the wind, I was basically lying on the tank with my face right next to the clocks

below 70 it was reet.

the bike did come with a screen (in a box of bits n' bobs) do they make that much of a difference or do i just need the mtfu?

The screen can make the air hit you in the chest less. It'll hit you in the head though Smile

At illegal speeds I can tuck in behind all my fairings and it's quite pleasant, no noise, no wind buffeting ... but it's not too comfortable being 6ft 2 crouching over the little zzr6.

Put it on and give it a go and see how it works for you.

I put a screen on my XJ6N and I get another 15 or so mph of comfort out of it. Starts to get uncomfy around the 90mph area now.

Fit the screen. It does help.

If your screen is there more for looks, or designed to work while you're tank-licking, yes.

So fit a decent sized one. If you can't find one, make one. Perspex + heat source + time.

I've never understood this chat about naked bikes being such a hassle to ride on motorways etc. At sustained legal speeds it's no hassle at all IMO and only really becomes a bit much 85 mph+.

All my opinion, obviously.

Never actually had a faired bike. Probably get one soon and find out just how spoiled the faired fairies are.

Had a faired and half faired and it does make a difference.

Also had a go on a friends 2010 Fireblade. At private runway speeds of over 120mph I had next to no wind buffeting or noise.

A private road like the M1? Laughing

I think you'll get used to it. I bought a faired bike because I knew I'd be on the motorway a lot, but I didn't have too bad a bike on the naked SV650 that I did my DAS on.

This. Were you really surprised?

You can either get used to it and build those neck muscles, or look at screens, or a helmet that has/creates better air flow around it. Screens and helmets can be a bit hit and miss, trying to get the right combination that doesn't just cause a different variation on the problem.

But how much riding are you doing at 70+? My old unfaired SV seemed ok - on motorway trips, I'd only do higher speeds in short bursts, don't remember having that much of an issue tbh. Mind you, on the SV, a sore arse probably distracted me from the problem a bit Rolling Eyes

Funny how many of us have these private roads isn't it? I do get pissed off with the number of people trespassing on mine though Thinking

Me and the missus did around 100 miles pretty much constantly at 90ish (private road, going back and forth again and again) on my little unfaired CB, didn't mind it massively unpleasant.

And i'm not exactly small nor aerodynamic. Man up!

It's awesome, joys of having a bike Wink

Does sound to me like a lack of neck muscles, or a lid that isn't very good at speed.

I have a shark vision r which wasn't too bad, apparently the speed r is a lot better as it is designed for naked bikes so will probably be a lot better

On the way back from the BCF EuroJolly I did about 500 miles of mostly motorway riding on my unfaired/unscreened CB5 and found it completely fine. This was doing between 80-90 most of the way (obviously, private road/no kitten were killed etc).

Saying that, I've never had a faired bike. Maybe when I eventually do try one I will think the CB was a massive pain for wind blast.

I had both and I can say, naked is always better, if you keep your head down at speed. Thumbs Up

On the zxr there are some positions where it's alright, but you don't get there quite often and there are so much turbulences around the fairings. It'd might get better when I get more used to the bike, but so far it's not so good. The CB-1 had 2 positions, upright and chin on the tank, both worked well.

I used to have an FZ6, with an added screen. The screen made quite a big difference, but at motorway speeds I used to get a lot of buffeting. It wasn't a massive problem for me, but after a while it did used to tire me out a bit.

I've now got a faired bike, which I much prefer.

I found 130kph was reaching the upper limit for comfortable motorway cruising on the ER6f - that's 80mph on a faired bike, but with a fairly upright seating position and a not terribly effective fairing.

But the difference is night and day when compared with my VFR's screen. I can cruise happily enough at 200kph (~125 mph) on it.

On my scooter, flat out on the motorway (~80mph), the wind does get to be a bit much after an hour or two - but that's bolt upright, and no wind protection at all from much above bellybutton height.

Most of my motorway miles are covering distance when touring, not in this country.
