Sat at traffic lights, looking up waiting for them to change I got hit from behind by a car
Had foot on brake so shunted forward and over to the left, I rolled off to the right.

As far as I can tell I'm un-injured

Got the bike to the work car park, damage so far that I can see:

rear axle shunted forwards
rear hugger damaged by part of his bumper
number plate broken off
top fairing cracked
dash in-fill pannel cracked
possibly right hand side in-fill damaged
crash bung (R&G type) scuffed and bent backwards slightly

what damage should I be looking for that I might not have noticed yet?

Is it worth having it assessed for repair not through insurance if other side is willing to pay (will get in writing)

I won't be riding home on it, too far on the motorway to risk it and no tools to sort axle / chain tension

assess for repair but sounds like insurance would write that off, will be a few hundred minimum just for bodywork I imagine

To get those parts outside of insurance, you'll be looking at a figure the driver won't want to pay.

Did you get the other parties insurance details?
Might be worth ringing them direct rather than involve your own.

Rear axle shunted forwards? Depending on the type, the chain adjusters might be screwed. Taking out the swingarm and checking it's straight just for this will take you an hour to remove it, then taking it somewhere to check it's straight etc.

My plan would be to get onto his insurance asap.
Go to the doctors anyway, just to get checked out. I'm not saying claim any injuries. I've lowsided at 10mph fucking about on roundabouts before and been fine, gone out to the pub after. Woke up next morning and could hardly move.

The chain adjusters on the ZZR are a screw type so if your lock nut thing was loose on them they might have unscrewed themselves with the pressure but they could be humped. Best to take the wheel out to give them a check.

Check if your handlebars bent any, does it touch the tank on full lock?

Probably can only check once rear wheel sorted but run a straight edge (a 6' flurescent light tube works) from back wheel to front to check if frame straight.

Worst case if not straight then insurance will write-off. You might also (a) have handling issues and (b) hassle and refusual if they check at next MOT (although places don't bother to check, just by eye). Can be straightened, there are people with jigs. However, hassle and cost of getting it to/from them may outweigh benefits (why insurance write it off, plus they play safe and say don't know if weakened in any important areas)

Might be an exit from ZZR ownership then,

Annoying thing is anything I buy has to be restricted until October

AA are coming to check it over and see if they can make safe for me to get home (probably avoid motorway)

if not it's over £100 recovery from them

Thanks for the info on the chain tugs snoosnoo
the lock nuts weren't loose as I always nip them up so they may have stripped, I'll check bars although there aren't scuffs on my bar muffs (yup, I'm cool)

Eff all that, get on to his insurer now and get them to sort everything out for you.

Are you sure that you're uninjured? Anything twinging or starting to ache?

I'd be getting onto his insurer really. With the bike you have it's going to be a write off, and he'll likely not want to pay the cost of all those repairs.

As for injuries, wait until the morning, that's when you'll start to feel any horrible aches and pains if there are any.

bit of ache from my neck if I'm sat at my desk too long but otherwise nothing,

AA has been, checked it over and test riden it for me and says he'd be happy riding it home so I'll take it steady tonight and get it home.

issue with insurance is I think they'll write the bike off and I'll be having to shop around quickly for another bike and get it restricted quickly to be able to get to work.

but then again, fixing it will take some time also

INSURANCE + POLICE

NOW.

I know and you know that his story will change.

It will turn into, that kitten killing biker was speeding and reversed into me at over speed limit.

POLICE? Why? Eh?

Once you price the parts up, there's no way Joe Average will pay for it, and the longer you leave it, the more likely it is that their recollection of the incident will change. For example, he's an awesome driver so surely he can't have just driven into the back of you because he didn't see you. Isn't it more likely that you swerved in front of him and then braked sharply? That would explain it![*]

Get them to report it to their insurer, with your contact details. They should then get in touch quickly to prevent you racking up costs. I'd notify my own insurer (not as a claim!) after you've assured yourself that liability has been admitted and the other driver's insurer is sorting you out.

You should be given a courtesy bike until they've settled, and if they write it off then most likely you'll be able to retain it for a fraction of the payout. Be sure to cost a restrictor into the value, don't let them fob you off with market value of a standard bike, because that's not an equivalent replacement.

[*] This is not conjecture. Mrs Borg mashed up an MX-5 last week. Totally her fault, car park brain derp, front impact into a stationary vehicle. Since any blame is still blame and there was no reason to screw the guy over, I prompted her to just say that to our insurer, and not to start to invent any story about why she couldn't have seen him, or maybe he was moving, or...

In the event, when I handed her the phone she started saying "Well, yes, I suppose the sun was quite low..." and got a smack on the backside for it. Tut Tut

he's contacting his insurance company,

Bike value on my insurance is 1200 as they asked what I'd paid for it (rookie error I know)

to buy another ZZR in similar mechanical condition (mine is sound but tatty appearance) is a few k to walk into a showroom as I'll need to buy one day and get to work the next.

I don't think he's going to change his story, but I have a witness anyway

Shouldn't be relevant, it's got nothing to do with your insurer or your insurance (unless blame is contested). You could be uninsured and he'd still be liable for the real market value.

You'll want to find an actual equivalent replacement vehicle for sale, including a restrictor, and have that to hand when they start haggling over the value.

Good one. Thumbs Up

You should hear from his insurer fairly soon. If not then I'd get in touch with them before involving your lot, even if you are fully comp, as it's in their interests to sort you out quickly.

I hope it goes well.

I'm home via A&E

spoken to the guy who stopped and offered himself as a witness, apparently I was "flung forwards by the impact and knocked off the bike but managed to remain on my feet" letting the bike be shunted out from under me, so not landing on my backside like I thought I had.

Injury -wise I've been sent home to just take ibuprofen and see how it goes.

He's informed his insurance but I got home too late to catch his insurance before they closed. will try tomorrow, should let my insurance know too.

I wouldn't let your insurance know until you have had a quick conversation with his.
They might be happy to get it all sorted asap to avoid your company demanding a hire bike and jumping through hoops.
Realistically, you'll end up getting paid out about 1k and get to keep the bike, maybe 1k for injuries and you can probably claim for your helmet if it touched the ground.

If they say anything about it being contested liability, just inform them your insurance company will be in contact, and that's where the time consuming bullshit starts.

TLDR: if they admit liability, liaise yourself, if they don't get your ins on the go.

Get yourself to your doctor and have what ails ye formally logged. There is a set procedure you need to follow to cover your ass and all potential bases.

Now get to your doctor and get painkillers. Give them a week and go back and ask for stronger ones ("the last lot aren't working any more and I hurt").

There are no brownie-points to be had in manning-up for the benefit of insurance companies, all they're looking for is ways to fuck you over. Show zero mercy and get what you can out of the criminal scum.

Takes a bit of effort but think of it as an hourly rate (a well-paid one).

Just spoken to the driver's insurance, the driver has phoned them and notified them of the incident, their claims handlers only work monday - friday so hopefully will have mobile reception while I'm away!

Just notified my insurance who are going to call back to take full details.

is it worth moving my bike to somewhere it's available for the insurance to collect it while I'm away or just leave it and they can get to it when I'm back?
