The inability to feel pleasure. The quack today told me it's what I've got and, apparently, have had for years. A severe case too. Yay, taste that fucking rainbow.

Drugs can cause it. One rewires the brain to experience a heightened sense of pleasure with drugs and gradually the Real Thing no longer makes the nut, no longer trips the circuits. Fucking Pepsi. The path from empathy to sociopathy.

Sad, matters. Anyone needs somebody knocked off? Laughing

First I knew of that. I do remember reading something about MDMA abuse over time causing issues with serotonin release but that was many moons ago and my honeymoon was relatively short lived regardless.

STFU Hetz,
You're an attention seeking grumpy old bastard suffering from hypochondria.

I crave stimulation, distraction. If that's "attention seeking"...semantics. What else is there? Nothing.

Christ mate, I just looked that condition up - I'll never be doing that again when anyone else comes up with something they've been told they are suffering from! Down that road lies hypochondria Shocked

In fact, just reading about Anhedonia is depressing me...

See, you need to get back in touch with the universe that you spend so much time telling us about the cosmicness of.

Prolly you need to calm down and concentrate on emptying your mind of *everything*

And then concentrating on one thing instead of fifty thousand.

You are SEEKING pleasure spots that you can no longer find.

Instead you should be removing all need or notion of them.

Then choosing an isolated one and getting back "in touch" with it.

That's my hippy lecture done for the day. Laughing

Some fucks would have to be given. A perfect Catch-22. Laughing

Before the quack gave it a name I considered it a form of transcendence. And who's to say it's not. Again, semantics. But consciousness has only pleasure to keep it from the abyss, so it's probably not a good place to be. But a big fucking meh. It is what it is, so either carry on playing the game with the ball one is given or take a long walk into the snow.

Boredom is the greatest of human emotions, it's what makes us special.

The fact that humans are able to be bored, is evidence that humans aren't content to just be existing, we have mental capacity for so much more than what the world can offer.

So ... "you may be some time" ...?

I'm interested to know about the condition, because I enjoy a bit of pleasure seeking myself, but perhaps not to the extent (or chemically enhanced extent) that you have done so. I would find it horrific to actually have no sensation of pleasure.

So I'm just wondering whether you (or the doctor) genuinely believe that you can't "come back" from that (even only by a percentage rather than in full) by somehow adjusting or realigning your sensory receptors, without actually being chemically enhanced.

Sorry to hear this Hetz.

You've seen a Dr so presumably some sort of medical treatment has been prescribed? Go with it, and if the following have not not been prescribed, try a talking treatment or CBT or NLP or hippy-shit and stuff. Not all at once though!

If you can't feel pleasure at the moment, can you remember what pleasure felt like? Can you recall a time when you were exhilarated, felt joy or happiness?

Remembering is a first step towards recapturing those feelings.

They're not lost, they've just been mislaid for a while.

Hang in there

X

PS I've heard that a BCF BBQ has miraculous regenerative powers. Ask Ghostrider.

It's to do with my insurance claim (the car smash). The independent medical guy said I need to see an osteopath (whiplash) and psychotherapist (anxiety attacks). FREE! (and private, nice).

I wake up every morning thinking I'll never feel pleasure again.

Then I roll off my arm and within 5 minutes the sensation comes back. I crack off a good'un and all is well with the world.

Maybe you are just lying on your arm.

Or, possibly, just lying....

Yes, I can remember what pleasure felt like. One of the key triggers used to be the smell of cut grass in the summer. Fuckall now. Can't connect to music much worth a wank now. Riding the bike, might as well be on a bus. Can't be arsed to party, mandy does nothing any more. Doesn't even make it hard to piss, which is fucking odd because I figured that was a purely physiological thing.

The quack couldn't say if it's psychological or physiological (brain chemistry etc), apparently they still don't know for sure either way. "Probably a combination" (that old "we don't have a clue" chestnut).

My love of the old Brett Easton Ellis passage has come back to haunt me:

Quote:
“Where there was nature and earth, life and water, I saw a desert landscape that was unending, resembling some sort of crater, so devoid of reason and light and spirit that the mind could not grasp it on any sort of conscious level and if you came close the mind would reel backward, unable to take it in. It was a vision so clear and real and vital to me that in its purity it was almost abstract. This was what I could understand, this was how I lived my life, what I constructed my movement around, how I dealt with the tangible. This was the geography around which my reality revolved: it did not occur to me, ever, that people were good or that a man was capable of change or that the world could be a better place through one’s own taking pleasure in a feeling or a look or a gesture, of receiving another person’s love or kindness. Nothing was affirmative, the term “generosity of spirit” applied to nothing, was a cliche, was some kind of bad joke. Sex is mathematics. Individuality no longer an issue. What does intelligence signify? Define reason. Desire- meaningless. Intellect is not a cure. Justice is dead. Fear, recrimination, innocence, sympathy, guilt, waste, failure, grief, were things, emotions, that no one really felt anymore. Reflection is useless, the world is senseless. Evil is its only permanence. God is not alive. Love cannot be trusted. Surface, surface, surface, was all that anyone found meaning in…this was civilization as I saw it, colossal and jagged…”

It's a bit over the fucking top but kind of captures the mood. I do kind of get off on the nihilistic despair of it and maybe that's a kind of (dark) pleasure in its own right, so not all is lost. Laughing

Dunno darling. Most of these quacks are intelligent but they've rail-roaded it down paths so specialized they no longer have half a fucking clue about reality.
