I'm going to make a run to Halfords tomorrow to get stuff to paint the patch near the base of the tank (see picture) that had an unplanned meeting with some brake fluid. It's removed the paint down to the bare metal. For now, all I want is a quick fix, using rattle cans or similar.

How should I tackle this?

Provisional plan is: mask unaffected areas -> pre-paint wipe -> spray affected area once with primer -> let dry -> roughen with wet and dry -> spray thin layers of black paint from rattle can on top?

As you said but, dont mask.

Rub all affected area down with 600 wet and dry.

pre-paint wipe whole side of tank.

2 coats primer affected area - dont worry about over spray hitting other parts of tank.

wet and dry again, making sure to get the over spray from primer smoothed down aswell.

pre-paint wipes again

go over with black.

For the extra effort it will take, after primer I would wet and dry whole tank, give it a third coat of primer covering the whole tank ( so the tank is an even colour and not black and grey ) and repaint it as one, the "patch" will be less noticeable that way.

Thanks for this. About how long does a coat of primer take to dry enough to add another coat?

If finish is no issue to you I would just wipe over, aim and fire.

With the black or the primer? Or - innovation warning - both simultaneously for that mottled rat-bike look?

10-15 mins between coats - 24 hours before rubbing down
