This is my trip report of the 2014 BCF Euro Jolly, which was organised by Marmalade Karma https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=28302&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Have spent a large part of the last week and a bit making this. Its a selection of photos taken by myself, and the other 15 people that came on the trip from the Monday 2nd-Friday 6th June. There is also a large amount of screenshots from my Drift helmet camera which was recording the entire duration of the trip, so apologies for the crap quality of some of the those. After sifting through many gigabytes and hours of video and thousands of pictures i've cut it down to this summary. Its still a very long thread but I wanted to keep it as informative as possible so it hopefully encourages more people to take an interest in next years Thumbs Up

To make sure people didn't get lost we used a drop-off system whereby Marmalade was at the front of the group leading for the duration of the trip, and I was the tail rider making sure we didn't lose anyone at the back. Everyone in between took turns to wait on each corner/junction/roundabout exit when they were riding in the second position, and would rejoin the column of bikes when they saw me and I signaled to say we hadn't lost anyone - it was extremely effective and very easy to get used to.

Day 1 Monday- Travelling to Folkstone to get the tunnel, we met various people along the way at different service station stops. After the tunnel we had a brief stop in Calais and then headed for our hotel for the first night in Lille.
Day 2 Tuesday - Went to our second hotel in Metz where we stayed the remaining three nights. This took us through Belgium and Luxemburg. Then in the evening went into Metz city centre.
Day 3 Wednesday - Went into Luxemburg City, then to Hackenburg Fort in France [red square on the map].
Day 4 Thursday - Went into Germany to Saarbrucken.
Day 5 Friday - Travelled back to Calais and got the tunnel back to the UK and went our seperate ways.

After three of the group accidently taking the motorway exit on a roundabout and getting seperated for a few hours everyone eventually made it to the hotel in Lille. This was the first of only two times the group got properly split up during the whole trip and would be easily avoidable on future trips now people are used to using the drop off system when we changed direction anywhere

The following pictures make us all look very professional. In reality there was an obscene amount of crashes into tyres, each other, and skidding into wild spins on the hair pin.

Heading back to the hotel. The second and last time we got split up during the trip happened shortly after leaving the karting track - Marmalade and three others went off onto the motorway and someone forgot to wait on the slip road so the rest of the group ended up in a village nearby for half an hour until Marmalade came and collected us
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/eurotrip/148_zps6a1922ec.jpg

The much fought over and prized vending-machine pasta - the only food anyone could find around the hotel by the time we finally got back. After much shouting, banging and shaking of vending machines we managed to clear out every pot of pasta from our hotel and the one across the street Laughing

We then hit some heavy traffic. The following pictures look like repetative pictures of bikes filtering, but take a close look at the wheel position of various vehicles. It was the same throughout the whole trip. I've never experienced filtering like it back in the UK. Every single person with the exception of literally one car that stands out in my mind as it was such a rare thing to see, made masses of space for us and did everything possible to let us progress through the congestion. There was no blocking or cutting us up at all.

Parking up in Luxemburg city. Another example of how biker friendly it is in mainland Europe. A fairly old guy came literally running down the street when Marmalade went to pull up at the first carpark, just to let us know there was an even bigger area around the corner we could fit more of the bikes in together.

We then set off to go back into France and visit Hackenburg Fort. Unfortunantely my battery died shortly after the following picture and I had forgot to charge my other one so the footage between Luxemburg and Hackenburg was the only section of the trip I missed.

Even during the war they had constant central heating, hot water and electricity throughout the whole tunnel complex. Soldiers also were given half a bottle of wine a day whilst working and two bottles of wine when off duty. Serving four days under ground at a time then having ten days in the local town for other duties/time off.

Because it was dark and I was tired [and i'm an idiot] I forgot about this after paying in the shop and went off with it sat on the back Rolling Eyes

Great read, and some great pics. You should have divided it up into a post for each day though, for an easier read, and more karma Smile

Very good thread on a very good trip Matt. Next time I feel we should make a "Where's Mini-Marm" photo competition (like "Where's Wally").

Also, if you liked this thread, then you'll love this thread (BCF EuroJolly 2015).

EDIT: taken tank bag photo out as Matt now has it on his post .

Followed by this.
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/eurotrip/1246_zpsa701325b.jpg

And then this. Traffic police were great, said no problem and went straight out to get it from the previous junction. Twenty minutes later they returned with...
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/eurotrip/1247_zps28c358db.jpg

This. Apparently it had been dragged about a mile - and the smashed remains of most of my stuff was strewn down the motorway Rolling Eyes what was recovered was pasted with WD40 and chain lube which had exploded in the bag Laughing Luckily my vehicle documents and license were recovered. Passport and lots of other stuff wasn't - so it made the trip a little more expensive than planned Rolling Eyes.
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/eurotrip/1248_zps7335d8d0.jpg

Took what was left - threw the bag and remains in the bin, and then the camera died due to the spare battery lying in the motorway somewhere Whistle
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/eurotrip/1249_zpse5996a45.jpg

The end.

Probably the best holiday i've ever had overall in terms of minute-by-minute enjoyment. Great bunch of people and great experience travelling in Europe on the bike. Really looking forward to next years and would highly recommend it to anyone who wasn't sure about this years Thumbs Up

I believe the total cost for me including breakdown, petrol, food, hotels and everything was somewhere in the region of £300. Which for five days holiday, riding in five countries, doing over a 1000 miles is not much at all in my opinion.

I have a few videos of various fly-bys people did of the group and the 'incident' picture/videos still to upload so there will be a few updates to this in the next week or two.

I did a very similar route first time riding abroad trip last September, only thing I don't know I'd like is the size of the group, we went in a group of 7 and that was perfect.

Luxembourg is a strange city. Did you stand at the memorial and look down on "old Luxembourg"?

We stopped at Bastogne though, and visited the real "jacks wood" (band of brothers) eery stuff

We didn't unfortunantely, was a bit of a flying visit through Lux - especially with the weather being so bad. Bastogne sounds very interesting though, would of liked to pass through anywhere like that.

Group size wise it seemed okay to be honest - parking was of course a little tight at times I would say was the only negative - and slightly longer queueing at fuel pumps Laughing

It was good in congested areas though as it meant we had a huge amount of people available to spread out across cities at various junctions as we gradually became more and more seperated by junctions and traffic lights - so it was always easy to have enough people along the route to act as bread crumbs for the ones behind to follow.

We didn't go for the whole war thing as such, but Bastogne was special, mentioned in all the war films, Sherman on the square on a plinth, bullet holes still in walls and a modern museum too.

Saying that, it's hard to avoid it, must of gone through 6 - 7 small villages with damages shermans on display!

We took the ferry, blasted into Belgium, had one hotel for the 4 days, it limits you overall, but much easier with luggage and get used to the local area, and can plan where to visit. Luxembourg one day. Twisties/fishing the next etc

Really great write up, very entertaining. Sounds like a brilliant trip. Not sure my bottomless fragile sanity would have survived so many miles.

You must all have bums of steel.....

Thumbs Up

Matt, you carma-seeking-epic-post-hungry bitch Laughing Laughing Laughing

Awesome trip, glad to be part of it. Particularly participating in both "Erm, Marm, we are lost" situations Smile

Loved every minute of it, thanks to all participating and Marmalade not organising it.

That was an absolutely fantastic read. Thumbs Up

I should be off the 125 by next year, so I will certainly be up for Euro trip 2015. At least I should be able to dip my toe in the water for the Wales camping trip this year. (still getting used to and sometimes confused by some big multi lane junctions over here at the moment Embarassed )

Looking forward to part 2 of the story and the revealing of the incident. Thumbs Up

Modern art.. you're closer than you think.

Now that I turn my thinking cap to the 'Artsy-Fartsy' setting, this does indeed look like an abstract representation of a motorcycle rider, with the helmet being the rider, the twisty metal pole the bike's frame (must be an old bike, chassis are stiffer nowadays) and metal bits and what else could that threaded black plectrum be but a tyre? And look, the whole contraption even sits on a patch of dark material similar to asphalt. I can imagine myself having nightmares of being chased by these things down a dark road. The mind boggles Shocked

Great write-up, really well paced Thumbs Up

Great write up mate, it looks like you all enjoyed yourselves. I can't help but notice there has been no advertised winner of the Annual BCF Lille Mini Marm 500cc Karting Championships...
