So. Before everyone gets their panties in a twist. I'v had nothing but good experience with Chinese and Spanish bikes so if we could focus on the main question not how 'Shitty' the bike is. That's be lovely

Right on.

So i should be picking up this bike

https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTgwWDc2Ng==/z/HrcAAOSw7PBTnyJG/$_80.JPG

It's a Sinnis Apache 125cc. 2013 with about 5k miles on it. It was hit from the Back at about 10mph the guy didn't even come off it he says. But as chinese bikes are so cheap. The insurance put 2 cracked panels down as a Cat c. Now He's just bought it back from the Insurance company and has the Logbook (Nothing about cat c on there) I'v done a Check on the Bike and all seems good. It's currently on sorn as the tax has ran out.

My question is, With it being a new bike first registered in April 2013. Is the Manufacturers mot/warranty still valid until April 2016? Or is it Void now?. I'm a Mechanic so checking the bike is all Straight and sound isn't a problem and i trust my own work. But am i legally required to re MOT the bike? Or can i pick it up. Repair it to new condition and Tax and Insure it?

I heard that the only issue with a Cat c is. The resale values go down and Some insurers won't touch it without proof of the work.

So is the MOT only required for the insurers that want piece of mind? aka not needed for the insurers who don't care?

Sorry if that made no sense. and i hope it's in the right section. Bare in mind i'm picking this bike up for £250. Not far from brand new, Low miles and logbook in hand.

As you're paying £250 for it, I'd just insure 3rd party only, in which case, whatever way they insurer works out the bikes value is largely irrlevant

No need to re-mot the bike:

https://ridershandbook.com/returning-an-insurance-write-off-motorcycle-to-the-road.html

Just insure and go, or sorn.

Insurance shouldn't be any higher than it was previously. They aren't fussed that it was previously written off. By the way Cat C, D etc.. are just terms they don't mean much. A Cat C by one assessor could be a Cat D by another.

Mot not required at all until 3 years old. No need to mot if bike still has valid MOT.

Would not trust a cat d chinkwagon though.

Were all the miles underwater?

Buy, insure, VED, ride, no worries.

Spicy110 rates his Apache, I was quite impressed with the one that I had a look at.

not sure if it would need a VIC check before it goes back on the road? If it's cheap, and as you say, you trust yourself to check it, then go for it.

Absolutely sure that it doesn't.

Someone should put together a write off FAQ, with links to relevant legislation/guidelines, so it can be made a sticky.

I've got a day off tomorrow, so I might have a go myself.

The only problem is, not all insurance companies interpret the guidelines in the same way, so it might be difficult to go definitive in some areas.

If you don't want us to focus on how shitty the bike is, why post a picture? Serious question. Wink

Don't do it.

Also don't compare Chinese to Spanish, as although they're not that great, they're exponentially better than Chinese.

any of the motohispania bikes vs any chinese bike I've seen? And Derbi.

there's no comparison.

250 is way too much for a chinese bike, no matter how new. 250 would get you a nice RXS100, or a CG if you're lucky.

Derbi are Piaggio group owned. They're sound enough. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the quality of the loom and electrical terminations/protection, etc. was miles better on my Derbi than it is on my Suzuki.

I have had zero corrosion on either bike so nothing to compare there really.

Just for clarity, I'm trying to say spanish is infinitely better than chinese.

Chinese are the lowest of the low. Rather a 30 year old other brand than anything with a "ching" in it.

So, get a Yamaha YBR 125 rather than a Jianshe JS125?

Yes. how is that hard to understand?

Just because it looks the same, doesn't mean it is the same.

Oh, Paddy, just because they're made of the same parts by the same people in the same factory for the same company doesn't mean that they're in any way similar. Tut Tut

Not everyone remembers high-street electronics shops where, if you wanted that particular budget ghetto blaster, you still had the choice of Saisho in Dixons, Matsui in Currys or Proline in Comet.

Lol wow. Thanks for the replies guys...

I text the guy saying thanks for holding it mate i'll definitely be there in the next few days.

He text me back saying there's a problem and that problem is the guy hasn't even finished paying for it... It's still on finance!

What an absolute tool. Oh well. You lot are gonna hate what i'm picking up tomorrow.

Here we go.

Lexmoto XRTS125
2011
Mot and Tax for 2 months
£200.
Runs fine. Need a new exhaust and a front plastic screen.

Is the front plastic screen a requirement for MOT? It's literally such a tiny screen. If so all i SHOULD need for the mot is the exhaust.

I know you lot are gonna go on about Chinese bikes and yes i know. It's just a cheap runaround because right now all the CG's and YBR's i'm seeing are £500+ and something that can get me around for 2 months at £200 is a bargain.

Gonna ride the thing for 2 hours home tomorrow down the A roads. Should be fine if i stick to 50-55.
