Sooo... has Harley been saving up all that innovation for decades, just to leapfrog into the future? Doesn't look that bad tbh, reminds me of a Diavel.

Featuring a three-phase induction motor with 55 kW of power (just under 74hp) and 52 lbs•ft of torque, the Harley-Davidson Livewire is packing more power than both the Brammo Empulse R (54 hp) and Zero SR (67 hp). That’s the good.

The bad is that despite its hefty casing size, the Harley-Davidson Livewire is a little light in the loafers when it comes to battery capacity. Our guesstimate on battery pack size, judging from Harley’s quoted charge time, is somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 kWh nominal, a bit less than the 9.3 kWh and 10.0 kWh of the Brammo and Zero.

That means the Harley-Davidson Livewire is good for just over 50 miles of mixed city and highway riding that is limited to 92 mph (we’re not really sure how Harley-Davidson came up with that figure). Expect to go 0-60 in around 4 seconds.

Lithium ion is a dead end. If you want confirmation, well, Harley just adopted it.

I doubt we'll see it in the UK, given that we (quite rightly) don't subsidise such trinkets. You'd have to be very bad at sums to think that any fuel savings will pay for the swingeing depreciation, and given that most of their customers are accountants...

I like the bike, pity they don't shove the 1200 v-twin in there.

Well, air cooled V-twins with push rods and separated gearboxes were and still are also a dead end. That's what Hardly a Davidson does the best, for decades yet still on the market. Thumbs Up

But the whole point about that is that Harley don't regularly obsolete their own bikes by releasing ones with better technology. Used Harleys hold their value remarkably well because they're essentially the same as the newer ones.

Given the rate that battery technology is advancing (and must advance if electric is to become mass market) then these bikes will soon look like relics even compared to other electric Harleys.

It's a bold move though, I'll give them that, and I expect they will sell, if only as novelty purchases.

Doesn't even need to be a weirdy-beardy streamliner fairing. Just a normal one so it doesn't have all the aerodynamic properties of a brick. I mean, look at the frontal area on that Hardley and it's almost perfectly flat and perpindicular to the wind.

The don't fit fairings to race bikes to give them somewhere to stick sponsorship stickers. Nor are they there for rider comfort.

Something like the one they fit to 'busas would be a good start. Especially the front mudguard.

92mph would feel pretty pedestrian with a fairing. For any impression of speed, naked is the only way.

Anyway, it looks great - especially for an HD.

If it had a fairing, it would go a lot faster than 92mph on account of not wasting energy shoving a huge wall of air ahead of it.

As Mr Borg pointed out elsewhere, electric vehicles aren't new - they predate internal combustion engine vehicles.

The electric motors have barely changed since then.

Sure, we have better controllers.

Batteries are the only significant difference and for the majority of markets they just don't make sense in the guises available.

For the cases where they do, people want too much.

I thought this was a late april fool, finally released after 20something years.

There has been an electric bike in my family for years, it's now with my niece. Despite claiming to be a harley, it bears a striking resemblance to the XV1100. It's also appropriately sized for a toddler.

I thought Harley was all about the noise? Does is come with a flattened coke can strapped to the swing arm to make a clacking sound as the wheel goes round? Laughing
