Personally I would go for an older 2 stroke 125; if you get one from about 10-15 years ago it won't have much lower performance than the latest ones, but will cost a whole load less.

Go for a bit older and you don't miss out much on peformance, but prices start at about £500.

Models to look at : NS125, NSR125, TZ125, RS125, AR125, RD125, TZR125, RG125, MITO (and others).

i think the main top 3 sports looking are the civaga mito, aprilia rs125 and honda nsr125.

btw does anyone have any idea what to pay for a honda nsr when considering the mileage and year?

so for example how much would a 10k miles - year 2003 bike be worth? or a 5k - 1998 bike? both in great condition...

Maybe 12-15 for the 98 and closer to 18-2k for the 03 private.

Your best bet's an old two stroke as said. At least with them it's not the end of the world if you do crash/drop it and should anything go wrong parts should be plentiful along with lower insurance.

thanks for that, do you know what amount of miles affects the price? so like every 3000 miles 100 quid gets knocked off?

Id go for an Aprilia RS 125. They've had a bad press with being unreliable-but i just got rid of mine ('04 Reg) and i had no problems with it. It looks cool and is the best 125 you can get. With the possible exception of an older NSR 125.

Hmmm maybe an RD125LC? Rolling Eyes They still have a good reputation. Nice little sports learner, quick acceleration but top end seems to be a let down. Just a suggestion though.

Indeed they are very nice bikes. Very quick and reliable enough yet sturdy and will take a lot of punishment. Not a lot will break when they are dropped.

Considered a commuter style bike, something like a CG, to get used to gears, or are you looking to keep a 125 on L plates for quite a while?

Theres a huge choice in 125's and if you say you like the DT, you could also go down the 4 stroke route and look at the XR125. Again, very strong bike with a decent grunty lump to power you along to about 60mph.

Depends what you plan to do.

From a 'ped owners perspective you'd probably want something along the lines of an RS125 from here, maybe an NSR125 (ebay it).

I mean that because you're a ped owner, buying a vehicle you know won't be used for very long doesn't bother you, and the depreciation isn't a factor.

I'm not having a go, just stating the points I'm noticing.

As a lot of people will tell you (and yes I know it's boring) but you're much better off getting the cheapest (but safe) 125 you can. And getting on and doing your test.

I sound like an old man.

But if you have lots of money to chuck around, which I guess you'll have a fair bit from selling your ped and you want something that'll look good and go well, you can't go far wrong with an RS.

im not sure on what i want really, theres so much choice out there like keith said. ive got a ped at the mo just because i cant have anything else really, the L plates situation i haven't given much thought apart from getting my full licence as soon i can
i would like a sports bike because of the performance and styling, but then something like a dt which is quite sturdy is also appealing

I have an RS125 and I have to say, I love it to bits. Really is a fantastic bike. I bought a used one from a dealership in mint condition, got used to the bike, then really thrashed it all the time. Big mistake. I was such an idiot, I come off on some country roads at about 40mph and done some nasty damage to myself. Was a wake up call, not only damage to myself, but the rather excessive bike repair bill. Rolling Eyes What I'm getting at, a 125 sports bike is great fun while it lasts, but very expensive in the long run. Poor fuel economy, drinks expensive oil, always the possibility of seizing (even greater risk if you buy a private but abused bike.)

If your new to gears, I'd recommend something more user friendly. A DT would be a good starter, but also consider the cheaper 4 strokes. I bought myself an old CG off ebay for a little over £200, got it road worthy and through its MOT and now I'm having a great time on that, even if it does struggle to hit 60. That comes out to play when weather is either too bad or I feel like having a laugh with some friends! Just remember, the less you spend on a 125, the more you can focus on getting through your test and after you have some experience on a more powerful machine, upgrade to something bigger. Smile
