First of all, hello and welcome to the forum!

so im 17 and looking for a first bike....my rents have already made quite clear they will not help with finances in any way so im on my own. ive been looking at the CG125s due to the more reliable 4 stroke engine. basically, are there any alternatives to the CG by other brands ie 125s that are reliable in contrast to speedy |
With the cg125 in mind (good choice for a frist bike by the way), you can also look at the suzuki gn125 along with the yamaha sr125. From each, you're looking at about 65mph maximum although you'd be more likely to stick to about 55mph as ringing the neck out of a 125 24/7 isn't nice unless you're a sadistic mo fo Build quality on those bikes are pretty much the best you'll come across on a 125 (particularly the honda) but it's quite often how you look after the bike.
Don't knock bikes from manufacturers such as Kymco and 125 cruisers offered by the popular makes. Just because they're all shiny or the manufacturer is unheard of, doesn't necessarily mean they'll rust immediately in rain. Look after it and you'll be sorted. WD40 will become your saviour I had a kymco zing 125 for my first bike and its engine was mainly based on a Honda cg's. Was a great bike, looked amazing for a 125 (more so than a CG, sr and GN put together), was very comfortable and was easy to work on.

Well, everyone seems to say that leather is the best, full stop. And maybe they are right, but not everyone can afford it and you may be more sensible buying more weatherproof stuff - cordura and similar material. For jackets, you can look at £60-80 for a basic one with protection. Gloves, £20-40, get a nice mix between padding/protection and decent, windproof material. Nothing worse than freezing cold hands. Boots you can get for £40, up to £70 for a real decent pair. Trousers can cost about £30-£80 and a helmet? They start at £40 these days, but the important thing about them is not the price, but how they fit on you.
When I was a learner, I spent £80 on a helmet and £30 on some Ashman kevlar gloves. That was it. Just wore some steel toe capped boots, my normal boots, and a padded jacket. I've never really bothered about investing in some protective trousers, but you should.
All the prices I have quoted you can vary wildly. Best to go to your local shop and try on some. If you find a popular make of jacket that you really like, check on the internet if its cheaper. You can do this with helmets as well, but you MUST try the exact same model of helmet on in a shop before doing this. Otherwise, you'll most likely buy a helmet which won't fit properly.
| GreyHam wrote: | AND lastly - for £2000, will i be able to get bike, insurance and gear
phew! thanks for reading |
Of course! £2000 should be plenty! Depending on where you live, insurance should be no more than £300 for third party only (no theft insurance), the bike? Could be £1000 and then you can get your kit for, say roughly £150-250. All depending on what you feel comfortable with. You may find though, that if you go and ride your bike with just a crap jacket, your parents will see how vulnerable you are out there and buy one for you Works a treat with mine although I always said no to their financial help.
Ring about for insurance quotes firstly is my advice. Get quotes for all 3 models if you wish but they're all very similar and what quote you get for one bike, you should get for the other (near enough). Then, once you get a rough idea on what it will cost, buy some gear and do your CBT on the schools bike (about £100). From there, you can go searching for bikes.
One question: Do you have a garage?
Oh and P.S, By the way, I had a 125 and now I have a 500, the only thing thats different about my clothing is my jacket, which I bought for £80. I dont wear protective trousers or proper biker boots. Maybe I should but its all about the risks you're willing to take. And when you're on the road, the balls not in your court so to speak, its in anyones. Just because you feel you won't crash and you feel confident that you're a good rider, it won't stop you from having a crash. There's a lot of silly people on the roads that can cause an accident at the blink of an eye. Be aware of this, and when you're fully thought it through and rode on your cbt, buy what you feel is appropriate.
Hope this helps. A smidgen
Good luck and enjoy is all I can say!!!! Get out there and have some fun. [/img] |

yeah what the other guy sed
in my case its more of the buy all the gear yourself and get the rents to buy everything else (yeah lucky i know they just look at it as a way not me to get out more and aslong as im safe dont really care as they wont give me lifts anywhere)
in my case:
bike: 1.5k
helmet: £100 - 150
jacket: £150-ish
trousers: £150-ish (300 in total for jacket and trousers)
gloves: £40
boots: £60 max
so for the whole lot about 500 - 650
but then for me id rather spend more of gear than other stuff (also helps im not paying for the bike aswell)
if you shop around a bit and find something you like you can usualy buy it online alot cheaper
good luck and try not to kill yourself with all thos boi racers in novas about |

You'll reassure your parents more if you get yourself at least vaguely decent kit to protect yourself, and IMO it'll help put you into a safer mindset when you go out on your bike. Plus, if you destroy a pair of jeans every time you come off, you'll soon have spent more on replacements that some decents breeks! You don't have to break the bank on getting flash gear - second hand stuff will do, but make sure and look after yourself. You only have one body, after all. Plus, if your parent see you're taking it all seriously, they'll eventually come around. My parents have been really cool about me getting a bike (but I was self-sufficient when I decided to get one), however I've had a new lid and new boots out of them as presents so far! ____________________ My Old CBR400RR | Bike Oil FAQ | Petrol FAQ |

Steveo, nothing wrong with thrashing a 125, its fun, but doing 65mph on a CG for 40 miles on a dual carriageway/motorway every day can feel a bit unsettling and cruel.
Not a very relaxing ride at all, is it? |
